On Friday, March 18, 2022 “Mama Sue” loving mother and grandmother passed away in Lubbock, TX. Margaret was born on May 18, 1931 in Tulia, TX to Loye T. and Irene White.
In 1948, at only 17, Margaret graduated from high school and moved to post-war Lubbock, TX to attend Texas Tech, with nothing but what would fit in her carboard suitcases. Her Grandfather sent her off with words of wisdom that she carried with her for life and continued to share with others until the day she died: there are 2 things you need to get through life, a strong faith in God and a heck of a sense of humor.
Not knowing a soul in Lubbock, the move was the first of her many adventures. Four years later, she completed a B.S. in education and married Jack Reeves of Wink, Tx. Over the years, they were blessed with two children, Dennis & Dee Ann.
Margaret earned an M.A. in Education in 1966 and served 23 years as a classroom teacher. But then she decided that she was ready for her next big adventure. She uprooted from the Texas Panhandle and bought 30 acres of isolation in East Texas where she designed and built her “Squa Sue Ranch”. There she raised cows and goats with the help of two collies, Rio and Aro. It was there where she married Bill Merrell, and the two of them shared many years of country life, even managing a country store, a small town community gathering spot in Mineola, TX.
After being widowed for a second time in 1987, she sold the ranch and moved to Lampasas TX, Margaret became involved in church and served the senior ladies of the community. She also enjoyed fishing, nursing baby goats, and feeding corn to the deer from her back porch.
A creative writer, she penned poems and stories, chronicled her life in journals and wrote songs to teach and share joy. In 2002, after returning, to Lubbock, Margaret joined a creative writing group and was a contributing author for the Golden Gazette. Her other hobbies included Tai Chi, taking computer classes, and spoiling her sweet puppies.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and husbands Jack Reeves and Bill Merrell. Margaret is survived by her son Dennis (Melissa) Reeves and her daughter Dee Ann (Jerry) Grand, granddaughters Emily (Alistair) Fyfe, Sarah (Justin) Connell and Clare (Benjamin) Hall, great grandsons William Graves, Colt and Barrett Connell, and her precious dog Ms. Prissy. Memorials may go to Hospice of Lubbock.
