Susan Katherine “Katy” Purtell Wallney passed away March 13, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Lubbock, Texas, on January 2, 1962, to Luther Ronald “Ronnie” Purtell and Hibernia “Christi” Nevitt Purtell. Katy graduated from Coronado High School in 1980. She and her husband Mark met in 1984 and were married in 1986. Mark and Katy welcomed their only child into the world on February 27, 1997, in Houston, Texas. Their daughter, Erin, was Katy’s true joy in life.
The desire to be closer to friends and family brought Mark and Katy back to Lubbock in 1999. Shortly after, Katy was inspired by her mother Christi to open her own real estate company, Katy Wallney Real Estate. Her hobbies, loves, and passions were her family, friends, and sports. Family often joked that she should be a color commentator for the Houston Rockets.
Katy was preceded in death by her parents, Ronnie Purtell and Christi Purtell, as well as her brother, Sean Purtell. She is survived by her husband, Mark Wallney; her daughter, Erin Wallney Reed, and her husband, Justin Reed. Katy is also survived by her oldest brother, Jim Purtell, his wife, Carolanne Purtell; her sister-in-law, Teresa Purtell; and her nephews, nieces, and cousins. She leaves behind her beloved dog, Polkadot, along with a loving group of family and friends who enjoyed numerous holidays and gatherings in the warmth of Katy’s home. Her home was filled with love, laughter, and hours of music and games.
Katy spent her final days clinging to her faith, surrounded by those she loved most. She had peace following her diagnosis and her soul was ready to meet The Lord. Although Katy’s faith in God carried her throughout her life, her final weeks brought her even closer to Him. Her room was filled with praise, worship, and scripture as she approached her last breath.
To honor Katy’s life, a visitation for Katy will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2022 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Resthavens' Abbey Chapel, 5740 19th St., Lubbock, Texas. A celebration of life service will occur Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at 9:00 AM at Resthavens' Abbey Chapel.
