Evelyn Sue Smith, 91, of Lubbock passed away on January 22, 2024. She was born in Lubbock, Texas on July 17, 1932 to Burton S. Burks and Madeline Warren Burks. She was married to Ronald Dean Smith from Roaring Springs, Texas for 38 years. He passed away in 1991.
Evelyn graduated from Texas Tech in 1953 and shortly thereafter married her sweetheart. She worked for the Registrar's Office at Texas Tech and while taking classes there she met the young man who she would marry. She worked for the registrar's office part time and while raising her young family also worked for the President's Office at Texas Tech. She began teaching school at Atkins Jr. High in 1968 and continued working for the Lubbock Independent School District for the next 29 years. Evelyn was an active member of the Chancel Choir at First United Methodist Church for 53 years. While a member of the Choir she and Ronnie were able to travel to many locations around the world, including England, Scotland, China, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand. Among those locations, England and the British Isles were among her favorite locations and she returned there often.
Evelyn's greatest pleasure in life was to be with her family, and she enjoyed spending time at the family lake house surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Evelyn and Ronnie had three children, nine grandchildren and 27 greatgrandchildren.
Evelyn will be remembered by all who knew her for her warm hospitality, her welcoming personality and her love for all she met. She was quick to make a friend and made many of them through the years.
She is survived by her son and two daughters. Kevin Smith of Denton, Texas, Rhonda Miller of Locust Grove, Virginia and Dana Mitchell of Lubbock, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ronnie, her Brother Burton S. Burks and her Sister Mary Kathryn Burks all from Granbury, Texas.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 26, 2024 from 5-7 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 10:00 AM, at First United Methodist Church in Lubbock.
Interment will follow at Resthaven.
