Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Baron Eliason officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 15, 2012 from 5-7 P.M. at Resthaven Funeral Home.
Wallace was born on July 11, 1922 in Lockney, Texas to Ivan and Ruth Hess.
In 1942 Wallace received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from West Texas State University, Amarillo, Texas, and in 1946 his Doctorate of Medicine from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, Texas. He then served his internship at Parkland Hospital, Dallas, Texas from 1946-1947. In 1946 he earned his Texas state Board License; he then served his Anesthesiology Residency in McKinney, Texas from 1947-1948. From 1948-1993 he had a Family Practice here in Lubbock. During this time he was associated with Methodist Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital as an active staff member and was named to the Emeritus Staff in 1993.
He was an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Practice, Sports Medicine from 1973-1974 and from 1975-1993 he was a clinical Associate Professor in the Texas Tech University Health Science Center Department of Family Practice.
He was a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians and American College of Sports Medicine. He was a life member of the Lubbock-Crosby-Garza County Medical Society in which he served as president in 1953, life member of Texas Medical Association, Texas Medical Association Sports Committee, past President of Texas Society of Sports Medicine, American Medical Association, and Southwest Conference Sports Medicine Society.
In addition to his private practice, Dr. Hess served as the team physician for the Athletic Department of Texas Tech University for 35 years, and as a consulting physician for Lubbock ISD for over 30 years.
He was also an active community member serving several positions with the Boy Scouts of America including the National Board of Directors, Kiwanis Club and Westminster Presbyterian Church. In 1956 he received the Young Man of the Year Award from the Lubbock Jaycees; in 1969 was named Honorary Member of the Saddle Tramps Spirit Organization at Texas Tech University; in 1989 was named an Honorary Member of the Texas Tech University Letterman’s Association and in 2003 was honored with the Hippocratic Award from the Lubbock-Crosby-Garza County Medical Society. He married the love of his life, Zelta Reid on June 15, 1947, in Abernathy, Texas. She preceded him in death on September 16, 2011.
Left to Cherish his memory are his loving sons, David Hess of Dallas, Randy Hess and wife, Mary Beth of Los Angeles, California, and Larry Hess and wife, Susan of Lubbock; grandchildren, McKinley Hess Lee and husband, Brandon, Dr. Nicole Hess and husband, Kevin Jentes, Lauren Saez and husband, Jeb and Maggie Hess; great grandchildren, Wyatt Saez and Autumn Jentes.
