Darryl Grant McCartor was born August 13, 1939, to James and Mary McCartor in Granite City, Illinois. He was the eldest of 4 siblings including Nila Owens (Larry), Delores Fowler, and Karen Mullin (Ronald). Darryl lived many placed including Kansas City, Missouri, Hooker, Oklahoma, Plainview and Lockney, Texas and finally, Lubbock, Texas.
Darryl recalled some of his best memories as a young boy included working and branding cattle with his father on the Hill Farm and other various farm work. Around this time, he fell in love with horses and the “cowboying” way of life. After leaving the Hill Farm and moving to Lockney he discovered his love for fishing, which he never lost. Darryl and his family soon moved to Lubbock where he attended Lubbock High. After realizing school wasn’t as interesting as making money, Darryl left and began working in a machine shop.
Darryl then joined the Navy in 1959 where he spent part of his time serving on the USS Gyatt. He served until 1961 and then spent 8 years in the reserves.
Darryl met the love of his life, Jane Ann Wright, and married her December 23, 1960.They had 5 children together: Dennis McCartor, Melanie Lowe (Troy), Michelle Harris, Misty Neufeld (Dave), and Christopher McCartor (Kayla). When he wasn’t working, you could most often find him in his shop welding and creating various things. Darryl and Jane also shared a passion for all things music. He was the church choir director for many years with Jane always on the piano. Music and faith were a major part of their life and they traveled to churches with their children to sing as “The McCartor Family Singer”. Their love of music continues to live on through their children.
Along with being the best father, Darryl carried many other titles as the best grandpa, great-grandpa, and friend to many. He was blessed with 10 grandkids and 3 great-grandkids. He had a beautiful marriage of 58 years. Darryl loved all things planes, trains, cowboys, fishing, and family.
Darryl is proceeded in death by his beloved wife Jane McCartor, his parents, and many more. His legacy will be carried on through his kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and all those that were blessed to know him.
