Alva was born and raised in Lubbock County where he spent his youth farming with his father and brother. He graduated from Cooper Rural High School in 1963 (now Lubbock Cooper High School). It was here that Alva met the love of his life, his wife of 59 years, Gail.
Alva continued his education and graduated from Texas Tech University. After a brief time in the Dallas area, Alva and Gail returned home with his two daughters to Lubbock and was hired on to the City of Lubbock Fire Department in April of 1971. Alva proudly served the city for 29 years before his retirement. Alva had a passion for serving his fellow firefighters and was dedicated to the Lubbock Fire Pension Fund where he served on the Board for 36 years from 1984 to 2020. Alva was also involved with TLFFRA (Texas Local Firefighter Retirement Act). He was an originator of the Texas Peer Review Committee educating firefighter trustees across the State of Texas. He loved dedicating his time to this service. He served in this capacity until his latest health challenge forced his retirement from this position. Alva was a member of Vandelia Church of Christ. He was fiercely passionate about his love for the Lord and his service to others. Alva was a man of many talents and interests and he wore many hats. He was a fireman, farmer, welder, metal building fabricator, avid golfer, traveler, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, church member, and friend.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William Dale and Rachel Selman Littlejohn, a niece, Carmen Littlejohn and his brothers-in-law, Jimmy Ray Kemp and Dee Huckabee.
He is survived by his loving wife, Reba Gail (Huckabee); daughters, Karen Littlejohn and Cindy Benson; granddaughter, Cortney Benson; grandson, Garrett Benson; brother, Harry Littlejohn and his wife Judy; sister-in-law, Treva Kemp; nephews, Brad Littlejohn (Sharon), Mike Kemp (Renee), Chris Kemp (Kelli), Joe Kemp, August Huckabee and a niece, Soo James (Jerry).
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, December 18, 2023 at Hillside Christian Church, 6202 Milwaukee Ave. The family will receive friends for visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Sunday, December 17, 2023, at Hillside Christian
Church.
