slipping away for the last 2 years from end stage Alzheimer's disease.
Grace’s husband Howard Day predeceased her in 1988; and her beloved grandson Duane Day, Jr. predeceased her in 2010. She is survived by her son Duane Day and his wife Ann; her son Jim Day and his wife Linda; her daughter Sibyl Day; and her daughter Kathy Crail and her husband Hans. She is also survived by her brother John Snyder and his wife Melba; her sisters Gloria Conte, Teresa Atondo, Dolores Holiday, and Mary Lou Meins; her cousin Jenny Marshall and her family; her sister-in-law Marian Bond and her family; nieces, nephews, and cousins; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. She had a loving caregiver, Rejieli Taito, who lived with her for the last two years of her life. Hospice of Lake County also provided loving care during the last few months of Grace’s life.
Grace quietly did good things. She raised kids and grandkids for over 40 years. She took care of her aging parents and her aging in-laws. She was a second mom to many of her children’s friends, and to two exchange students from Europe.
For several summers Grace and her husband Howard hosted wounded Viet Nam era soldiers for weekends at Clear Lake. They would get a van and go to Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland and return with 15 to 20 men. These wounded men would swim in their pool, have barbeques, eat well and just generally get to relax. Grace and Howard didn't believe in the war--they believed in these men.
Grace liked to travel. She went to Europe several times, including once to the Winter Olympics.
For as long as they had their mobility, Grace and her sister Rose made Christmas and Thanksgiving baskets for hungry families. They would clip coupons; shop for the food; bag and deliver it to over 30 families--year after year. They would find out details about the kids in the families and buy gifts for them.
Grace and her sister also knitted blankets and made quilts for AIDS babies and other needy children.
Grace loved her church, the Community of Christ, and worshipped with her fellow congregants Louise Braddock and Paula Johnson until right before her death.
A memorial service is planned for March. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Outreach International (P.O. Box 210, Independence, Missouri 64051), one of the many charities Grace supported.
Arrangements under the direction of Jones & Lewis Funeral Home, Lower Lake, CA.
