Metana Puev Lucas

Metana Lucas, age 88, of Fort Collins Colorado, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2024. She was born in Boynitsa, Bulgaria, and was the daughter of the late Canko and Perka Puev. After coming to the United States in 1955, Metana graduated from Geneseo State University of New York with a bachelor’s degree in education, and also earned two subsequent masters degrees, the first also from SUNY Geneseo in Education and the second from Cornell University majoring in African and Asian History.

Metana had a 31-year career as a high school history teacher in North Tonawanda, New York. What started out as a short-term job to pay off her student loans ended up being a deeply gratifying life-long career as an educator. She was well loved and respected by her students and the community because of her commitment to her students’ lives, always going the extra mile for them.

While living and working in North Tonawanda, Metana met her beloved husband, Kurt Lucas. They both loved to travel and enjoyed many adventures over the course of their marriage of 31 years. One of Metana‘s all-time favorite travel destinations was the family gathering place of Maui, Hawaii, where the entire family spent many vacations together.

Metana was a member of Saint Spyridon Orthodox Church in Loveland Colorado.

Surviving Metana are her sister-in-law, Alexandra Puev; stepchildren Jackie Lucas DiVincenzo and husband Samuel, Wayne Lucas and wife Farah, and Jeff Lucas; nephews Ned Puev and wife Elaine, Mark Puev and wife Christy; niece Victoria Hensen and husband William; and grand nieces and nephews Lauren Hensen, William Hensen, Mia Hensen, Ariel Puev, Katie Puev, Lindsey Puev, Alexis Puev, and Andrew Puev.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Kurt Lucas and her brother Ned Puev.

A Memorial service for Metana will be held at 12 PM on Wednesday, March 27 at the Saint Spyridon Orthodox Church, located at 807 W 29th St. in Loveland. Following the church service, a graveside service will be held at 3pm at the Chapel Hill Cemetery located at 6601 S Colorado Blvd. in Centennial.
