He was a native of Edmonson County, KY, and the son of the late Grover and Lydia Madison Johnson Oval was retired from International Harvester, a member of the First United Baptist Church (Longfield), where he served as treasurer and Trustee for many years, member of Okolona VFW Post 8639 and OddFellows Lodge # 164 of Brownsville, KY.
He proudly served his country during World War II as a corporal in the 16th Armored Division, 26th Tank Battalion as a squad leader in the recon Platoon. He served with valor and was awarded the Bronze Star, The European Theater Medal with 1 Battle Star and the Presidential Unit Citation.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Beverly Ann Barrow; and his brother, L.G. Junior Johnson.
Survived by his loving wife of nearly 63 years, Gloria Cowles Johnson; sons, Rev. Larry (Diane), Barry and Kenneth (Sally) Johnson, son-in-law: Ed Barrow, Jr., also survived by five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild and a brother, James Johnson.
Funeral services are noon on Saturday, January 1, 2011, First United (Longfield) Baptist Church 5507 Cartledge Ct., with burial with military honors in Lone Hill United Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, noon - 8 p.m. on Friday at Arch L. Heady & Son, Okolona, 8519 Preston Hwy and after 10 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
