Retired Sergeant First Class William “Bill” Dwyer, 86, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2015. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Vera, and is survived by his daughter, Jo Ann Dwyer-Owings (Bill); three sons, Bill (Martha), Thomas (Brenda), Jeff (Jennifer); nine grandchildren, Kathleen Dwyer, Lindsey Owings, Eric Owings, Ryan Owings, Will Dwyer, Caroline Owings, Matthew Dwyer, Michael Dwyer, and Jack Dwyer; and one great-grandson, Jacob. Bill was born on February 7, 1929 in Brockton, Massachusetts, and entered the army in 1948. He married Vera Maslij in Furth, Germany, and together they raised four children. Their military family resided in multiple destinations over the next 24 years, including Germany and Italy, before finally settling in Louisville, Kentucky. His military service included a post-World War II tour in Nuremburg, Germany; one tour in Korea; and two tours in Vietnam. Bill was very patriotic, proud to have served his country, and was never without his camouflage military cap. An avid sports fan, he closely followed his Boston sports teams. He most enjoyed celebrating important events with his family, particularly Thanksgiving and beach vacations.
Visitation will be Monday from 4-7pm at Heady-Hardy Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Highway. His funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday at 10 am at Fort Knox Main Post Chapel, with a private burial to follow in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Disabled American Veterans.
