the long-time owner of Spangler's Hardware at the Douglass Loop and Spangler's Lawn Mower Shop on Dundee Road, passed away on September 12, 2017 at age ninety-seven. At the end of WWII he opened a Shell Station at the Douglass Loop and in 1959, across from the station, he opened his hardware business. He started selling Lawn-Boy lawn mowers at the store which led to repairing them. He eventually opened Spangler's Lawn Mower Shop on Dundee. He enjoyed the repair side of the business and when he moved to the nursing home in March, there were sixteen mowers in his garage repaired and ready for sale.
He also enjoyed music and was known to select an album from his collection, put it on the stereo, and turn it full volume so he could hear it all over the house. But what he missed most at the nursing home was his beloved miniature Chihuahua which had provided companionship and comfort to both him and Ione.
Tom was one of nine children born to Harry George Spangler and Susan Addie Hatchel Spangler of Jeffersontown. In 1942 he married Sarah Hattie "Jo" Hawkins, the mother of his son, and on December 26, 1974 he married Violet Ione Hamilton who predeceased him on September 25, 2015 also at age ninety-seven.
Besides his parents he was also predeceased by his son, Stanley Gordon Spangler; his sisters, Lois Anita Tobin, Virginia Rose Frazier, and Patricia Ann Bottorff and his brothers, John Baker White Spangler, Harry H. Spangler, Paul L. Spangler, Francis Willis "Bill" Spangler and Phillip R. Spangler.
He is survived by 12 nieces and nephews; sister in-law, Lucinda H. Spangler of Waddy, Sandy Kirkpatrick of Florida; close family friend, Sharon Schiemann of Louisville and former daughter in-law, Judy Johnson of Nashville, TN.
Thanks and appreciation to the staff at Highlands Health and Rehabilitation Center for their care of Tom since March 2, 2017. The graveside service will take place 1:30pm at Cave Hill Cemetery, Friday September 15, 2017. Arch L. Heady at Resthaven was entrusted with arrangements.
