Born on July 23, 1940, near Hazard, KY, Martha was the very middle of seven children. As a farm girl and a coal-miner’s daughter she learned the value of hard work and sacrifice from the beginning. Her positive personality and attitude of service were always evident, not only at home with her large family, but also at MC Napier High School where she would earn multiple awards and be crowned Homecoming Queen her Senior Year. A local boy would also notice this “raven-haired beauty” and they were married August 22, 1959.
Martha's family was the centerpiece of her world, and she nurtured them with the same patience and care that she gave to her bountiful garden. She cherished her role as a homemaker, always prioritizing the care of her children, Paula and Ray.
Her home was always filled with the aroma of her cooking, a testament to her extensive collection of recipes, each a beloved treasure. Martha's hands were rarely still, as she was often found sewing clothing for herself and her children or crafting a new quilt, skills she honed with joy and precision. Her creative spirit was also manifested in her love for restoring antiques, a craft that allowed her to breathe new life into forgotten pieces.
Martha came to saving knowledge of Jesus Christ at the age of 17 and has served the Lord ever since. She was a faithful member of Bethlehem Baptist Church for 60 years. There she taught children's Sunday School for many years, taught Vacation Bible School and assisted with other church sponsored events and projects.
As we say farewell to Martha Elizabeth Roberson, we celebrate a life richly lived and a woman dearly loved. Her legacy will flourish in the lives of her family and in the beauty she brought into the world. Martha's life was a beautiful journey that ended as it was lived—with grace, beauty, and surrounded by the love of her family.
Martha is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Paul Roberson; their children, Paula Hanson and husband Hadley and Ray Roberson and wife Vickie. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kendall Tanner and husband Craig, Micah Vawter and wife Deidre, Ben Roberson and wife Molly and Josh Roberson. Great grandchildren, Josiah, Michaela, Benjamin, Isaac, Kristen, Rowan, Kaylee, Magee, Kohen and Grady. She is also survived by a sister, Linda Gail Wooten and many other relatives and friends.
