Katherine M. Baker

William and Mabel Jones of Kodak, Kentucky welcomed their seventh child, a baby girl, Katherine M. Jones, on Thursday, March 26, 1936. A country girl at heart, she spoke fondly and often about her parents and siblings while growing up on a farm. She used to talk and laugh about how far she had to travel to get to school, often hopping a train to get there. Her stories were so engaging it would leave you wanting to hear more. She enjoyed climbing trees and being a tomboy. Above all and most importantly, she loved the Lord. She gave her life to God at a very young age, baptized the “old fashioned way” down in a creek in Kodak, Kentucky.

She became Katherine Jones Baker when she married Richard Baker from Hazard, Kentucky on December 31, 1956. They moved to Louisville, Kentucky to start their family. Kat took great joy in doing the little things for family and friends, everything from making sure you woke up on time for school to being a babysitter if she was needed. She loved unconditionally and unselfishly, she wanted to know everything about you and your life. She was a caring person with a huge heart, many people called her “Mama Baker” for good reason. She raised four kids and had a hand in raising nine grandkids and three great grandkids. She loved to laugh and watch her favorite TV shows, which included Walker Texas Ranger, In the Heat of the Night, Andy Griffith and Family Feud. Also she loved movies by Steven Seagal and Charles Bronson. Her happiest moments were when family and friends gathered together to eat, tell stories, and were having a great time.

She is survived by her sisters, Pauline Adams of Hazard, KY, Josephine Hooks of Nashville, TN, brother-in-law Walter Hooks of Nashville, TN, sister-in-law Delores Jones of Hazard, KY, Son Mark Baker of Louisville, KY, daughters, Cathy Baker of Greensboro, NC, Tracy Thomas of Louisville, KY, and Debra Hughley of Lexington, KY, Granddaughters, Kellie Baker, Brittany Baker, Tiera Thomas and Shanya Baker all of Louisville, KY. Grandsons Dwayne Baker,Sheatun Davis, Deonta Campbell, Trey Thomas and Christopher Mayes all of Louisville, KY. Great Granddaughters, Taylor Baker and Simone McCoy both of Louisville, KY. Great Grandson Sheatun Richard Davis of Louisville, KY and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A final thought about Kat, she was a great person who shared tons of wisdom. Her favorite quote was “You cry for babies and smile for the dead” so with that in mind everybody smile and be happy for her return home to the Lord to be with her parents, husband, son, sisters, brothers, and great granddaughter Camryn Baker. Rest in Peace!!

The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., Friday April 15, 2016 at Evergreen Funeral Home. Funeral services will be officiated by her niece and nephew, Pastor Emily Hudson and Steven Jones on Saturday April 16, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Evergreen Funeral Home Chapel.
