James graduated with both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Louisville in English and Education. He was a beloved elementary school teacher in the Jefferson County system, specifically at Price Elementary and also taught adult and continuing education for many years, retiring from JCPS in 2002. James was a KY Colonel and a member of the KY Retired Teachers’ Association. He was a consummate “grammar police”, and loved all things related to historic literature and art. His caring nature and gentle spirit were felt by all who knew him, and he will be missed by everyone. James was kind, compassionate soul, yet also had a wry sense of humor that often kept friends and family in exhaustive laughter.
James’ first, second and fifth grade students doted on him and considered him somewhat of a novelty, being the only male teacher in his school. His classroom “children” were also family to him, and he was great encourager to his “night school” adults.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Mary (Bickel) Pounds and James Pounds, Sr. and his sisters, Bonnie Dendinger and Denise Pounds. James is survived by his three sisters, Georgie (Cecil) Shannon; Nina (Tom) Seigle; and Lois (Danny) Dambros. Additionally, he is survived by nephews Andy Dendinger; Kelly and Bryan Shannon; Josh and Sam Seigle; Daniel Dambros and a niece Dana Cundiff. He also has several great nieces and nephews.
A visitation for James will be held Wednesday, December 11, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218, followed by a funeral at 2:00 PM.
