Jim was born on June 20, 1928, in Woodsfield, Ohio, and lived most of his youth in Zanesville, Ohio. He was a 1952 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and was a career army soldier for twenty-seven years. He was a combat helicopter pilot with two years of service during the War in Vietnam and was a soldier who did his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty. He earned two Bronze Stars and four Air Medals for his service.
His beloved wife of sixty years, Virginia, predeceased him in 2013. He is survived by his son Douglas Campbell (wife Tracey Hopper); and son Gregory Campbell (wife Dawn Campbell). Also surviving are two grandchildren, Rebecca (Becky) Baird (husband Justin Baird) and John Campbell (wife Julie Pickering-Campbell). He has four great-grandchildren; Hadley Baird, Nathan Baird, Emery Campbell and Samuel Campbell.
Jim trusted Jesus for salvation while stationed in Bangkok, Thailand and served God in the Church of Christ for the next fifty years. In recent years, Jim attended Hurstbourne Baptist Church. His family is deeply grateful for the loving care he received at Ashton on Dorsey, where he was a resident for the past year.
There will be a private graveside service for Col. Campbell at the Dayton National Cemetery at a future date.
