Ida Draughn Martin, 99, passed away on Sunday November 14, 2021. Ida was born September 18, 1922 in a rural community near Hazard in the Appalachian Mountains. She was married to her beloved husband, Rola Martin for 66 years. Rola passed away in July of 2011.
Their legacy spanned 5 generations. Ida was a loving wife to Rola, and devoted mother to their 5 children; Jeannie Spencer (Leon), Glenn Martin (Nancy), Kay Ray (Danny), Sam Martin (Linda) and Debbie Slaughter (Dennis). Our precious Debbie passed away in August of 2008 from bone cancer. Ida was an awesome grandmother to 11, great- grandmother to 21, and great-great grandmother to 15. Her family was her passion.
Her second love was her students. Ida was an elementary school teacher for 30 years In the Jefferson County School System; first at Medora Elementary then at Trunnell. Ida made her students feel so valued and loved that many would visit her classroom for years to touch base .
The family would like to express appreciation to Dr. Andrew Lally and nurse Robin with Hospice and Tracey Davis, Rosemary Price and Brittany Johns for the loving compassionate care they provide for Ida throughout the last couple of years.
Ida’s service will be Friday November 19, at 10:30 AM at Advantage Hardy Chapel 10907 Dixie Hwy. Burial will follow at Bethany Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday November 18, from 2-8 PM at the funeral home.
