Sonny was born September 1, 1947 to Harold and Elizabeth Cox in Louisville, Kentucky. He joined the United States Air Force in 1965. During his earlier years, he was a figure-eight race car driver at the Fairgrounds Motor Speedway and the Sportsdrome. In 1980 Sonny set the track record in the figure eight division, a time that will never be beat. Later on he also raced at the Louisville Motor Speedway. He was very fond of his dog, Bessie.
He is survived by his wife, Lyda "Liz"; children, Bryan K. Cox, Dennis (Jennifer) Thompson and Dee (Boo) Watkins; grandchildren, Bryan Kristian, Darrian, Alexis, Taylor, Jaden, Jamie, Jarid, Brooke and Katie; great grandchildren, Maddex and William; siblings, Deborah R. Vanover and Bruce K. (Rhonda) Cox.

A celebration of Sonny's Life will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 12 pm at the funeral home.
