Gilbert is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jeanette; his son, Gilbert Jr.; his daughter, Sarah; his daughter-in-law, Rosa; and two grandchildren, Gabrien and Zephen.
He was born December 15th, 1928 to Sam and Frieda Shaheen in Louisville, KY. He was first generation to his parents who were of Lebanese descent.
At the age of 7, Gilbert began working at Shaheen's Department Store founded by his father, Sam Shaheen, in 1922 in the Portland neighborhood of West Louisville. Many customers were amazed by how Gilbert would remember their name and clothing and shoe sizes each time they came to the store. He took tremendous pride in serving his customers for over 50 years.
Gilbert married his wife, Jeanette, in 1970 at St. Michael Orthodox Church. He was a devoted husband and loved his children more than life. He had a passion for world history, reading, drawing, arts and crafts, story telling, old movies, and classical music.
Gilbert was a loving, kind-hearted, generous, humble, forgiving, thoughtful man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was a man of God and always had a smile on his face.
Visitation will be held Saturday, December 9, 2017 at St. Michael Orthodox Church, 3701 St. Michael Church Dr. Louisville, KY from 10am - 12pm with a funeral service beginning at 12pm. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Louisville, KY.
