Emma Schmidt Briggs was born February 19, 1918 in Louisville, Kentucky the daughter of Mary and Fred Schmidt. She graduated from Atherton High School in 1936. She lived and worked in Louisville following graduation. She married Frank Briggs on September 28, 1940. Her marriage to Frank lasted more than fifty years until his passing on August 17, 1994. Whether it be as a military wife, or in church, or bridge club, or in the neighborhoods and places she lived, her deep connections with others reflected her kind spirit. She was an active member of St. Matthews United Church of Christ, Hancock Congregational Church, and then of St. Andrews United church of Christ.
She had two sisters Ruth Allsmiller (Bob) and Dottie Novicki (Al), a brother Fred Schmidt, Jr. (Martha), a sister-in-law, Martha Harris (Byron), nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews that she loved very much. Emma is survived by her daughter, Judy Steedly (Gary), son, Rusty Briggs (Barbara), grandson, Matt Steedly (Tara), granddaughter, Katie Curling (Greg), two great granddaughters, Emma and Amelia Steedly and step-great granddaughter, Natalie Curling. She loved reading, cross word puzzles, bridge, travel, fishing, tennis, golf, knitting, sewing, quilting, and (in her late years) her cat, Josie.
A celebration of Emma Briggs’ life will be held Saturday, August 5th at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Rd, Louisville, KY 40218. Visitation will be from 12:00-1:00 pm with a memorial service following.
