Doris Deloise Burke, (you may have known her as "Punky") who was called to our heavenly home on Monday, September 22, 2020. She was proceeded in death by her husband Raymon Burke of Lavonia, Ga, one brother Alfonzo Holt of Salisbury, NC and her parents Precious Worthy and Kate Worthy both of Salisbury, NC.
Her spirit is carried on by one son Raymond Jr (Jennifer) Burke of Louisville, KY, A very special nephew Clarence (Lisa) Clark of Elizabethtown, KY. Two granddaughters Simone Burke of Conyers, GA and Raelynn Barnes of Detroit, MI. Five grandsons Adrian and Austin Burke of Durham, NC, Jordan Jones and Patrick (Mia) Barnes of Louisville, KY and Brandon Cleaves of Detroit, MI. A host of nieces and nephews in North Carolina and New Jersey.
Doris enjoyed many things and was well known for her ability to style hair and top-notch cooking. She traveled to New York when she was 18 years old to do hair in the big city until the pressing needs of her family called her back home to North Carolina where she met her husband Raymon of 42 years until his death. This is where her real journey of life began as a dedicated Army Wife of a soldier serving in the Korean War as well as the Vietnam War. She lived in Germany for three years while her husband was stationed in Baumholder and traveled to many other areas until the family retired in Louisville, KY.
Doris being a dedicated and skilled homemaker enjoyed taking care of her family and friends and in most cases was the alpha of the group, always making sure everyone’s needs were tended too. She did have odd jobs through the years if she wanted to remodel her Valley Station home with elegant furniture and then she returned to a dedicated homemaker. She enjoyed bowling, playing bingo and old western movies. Doris had a strong social circle, many times being the life of the party and cherished her time with three very special friends that were more like her sisters known to many as “The Golden Girls”. She was preceded in death by Mary Dotson (Louisville, KY) Letta Tucker (Radcliff, KY), and the last surviving Golden Girl is Bernice Collier (Atlanta, GA).
We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Doris during her 90 years, among them: Never send your loved ones out the door without hot breakfast, this applied to everyone in the neighborhood as well. Never waste one cent because those cents wasted ending up being enough to buy security doors for your home one day. Never take more than $20.00 to a casino. Always carry a handbag to Golden Corral to take cookies home in a napkin for late night snacks. Never leave your purse on the floor you will always be broke. Always wear lipstick it makes you feel better. Stay out of the left lane unless you are driving at the right speed.
Doris is reunited with her husband, friends and loved ones but we will all remember and honor her memory. Please join the family in a virtual viewing on, Tuesday October 6, 2020 at 12:00 P.M and the virtual graveside service to follow the viewing.
