Donald "Donnie" Smith

Don was born on June 26, 1936 in Hodgenville KY to Chester Arthur Smith and Lura E. (Whitlow) Smith and sister Dorothy Smith Lynch.

As a child he moved to Louisville KY and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1954. Don earned a BS in Business at U of L in 1958. He enlisted in the Army in 1959 and served in the reserves until 1965.

He married Barbara Ann Weber on October 7, 1960 in Louisville. His new position with Travelers Insurance moved the couple to Lexington, KY in January 1961.

As an Insurance Adjuster he held positions with Zurich, Meridian, Prudential and McIntyre & Horton Insurance. He later became a real estate agent with Adkins Real Estate.

Don and Barbara had two children: Shelia Smith Gustafson and Mark Landon Smith and 4 grandchildren. He enjoyed his family, especially extended family gatherings and celebrations.

Don served as a deacon at Rosemont Baptist, Central Baptist, Crosswoods Baptist and Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. He loved UK basketball and Cincinnati Reds baseball. Don enjoyed bowling, square dancing, and reading. He never met a stranger and enjoyed talking with others.

Don moved to Westminster Village in Clarksville IN in June 2019 to be nearer to family and passed away peacefully at the facility.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Lura E. Smith, his sister Dorothy Lynch and brother in law Raymond Lynch.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Ann Weber Smith, his daughter Shelia Smith Gustafson (Chris), son Mark Smith (Kym), four grandchildren Emma Smith, Gwyneth Smith, Andrew Gustafson, and Joshua Gustafson and niece Susan Lynch Cahoe (Jim) and many extended family members and friends.

The family will be holding a private graveside at Arch L. Heady Resthaven Memorial Park with a memorial in Lexington in late spring. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Nicholasville, KY or Eastern Heights Baptist Church, Jeffersonville, IN.
