JEFFRIES, David Newton, 78 - known to family and friends as “Dave” or “Dude” - born March 15, 1943, died peacefully at his home on Friday, October 29, 2021. He is preceded in death by his father, David N. Jeffries, Jr., his mother, Helen Meihaus Jeffries Clare, his stepfather, John J. Clare, and a sister, Dorothy O’Neil.
He graduated from Most Blessed Sacrament School in 1957, St. Xavier High School in 1961 and attended Bellarmine College. He was a United States Army Reservist and a Kentucky Colonel. He has many happy memories of his “old gang” and the good times they shared, and was fond of giving them all nicknames.
David retired from Winn-Dixie in 2003 after 42 years of service, during which the good-natured nicknaming of co-workers continued. Many of these nicknames are still used, along with many work-related catch phrases.
He was an avid UK sports fan, a die-hard New York Yankees fan and followed Notre Dame football
enthusiastically. He was also a huge Jimmy Buffett fan and attended many of his concerts. He and
his wife Anna were members of The Derby Parrothead Club for many years and made many friends along the way, who gave them their own nicknames of Frank and Lola, alluding to a Buffett song.
David is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Anna Jeffries; two daughters, Kimberlee Smiley (Bruce) and Tracey Adams (Jeff), and a son, Troy Jeffries; a sister, Shannon Hafling (James); two stepdaughters, Betsy Pearsall and Mary Shields Frabott (Thomas); and a stepson, Samuel Shields (Hilary). He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Meghan Williams Connolen (Brandon), Hunter Adams, and Helena Jeffries; and five step-grandchildren, Jessica Carpenter (Peter), Vincent Carpenter, Zachery Carpenter, Clifton Pearsall, and Anna Pearsall, and two nephews.
David was a Catholic and a lifelong member of Most Blessed Sacrament Church. Visitation will be at Evergreen Funeral Home, 4623 Preston Highway on Monday from 12::00 until 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Most Blessed Sacrament Church , 3509 Taylor Boulevard , Tuesday at 10 am with interment at Evergreen Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made through donations to the American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association, Hosparus of Louisville, or to the charity of one’s choice.
