Carby Wayne Sawyers was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 17th, 2024. Carby was born in 1947 on the 27th of October in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. He grew up working on local farms. He thrived throughout in his education, excelling in multiple sports during High School. Carby enlisted in the Army on February 17, 1967, serving Honorably throughout his service including a tour to Vietnam from May 5th, 1968 through September 10, 1969. He was Honorably discharged from the Army February 13, 1973. After returning from Vietnam, Carby enrolled in Mountain State College where he earned an Associates Degree in Transportation.
After earning his degree, Carby was employed by Smith Transfer. In the early 1980’s Carby was transferred with by his company, to Louisville Kentucky. In 1982 Carby met Sherry in Louisville, Kentucky. Carby and Sherry went on to marry on January 2nd, 1984 at their home in Simpsonville, Kentucky.
In 2008 Carby retired from the transportation industry. After retirement Carby enjoyed spending time with his family. Carby spent a lot of his time outdoor tending to his horses and dogs. He loved spending time watching sports and horseraces, especially his beloved Kentucky Derby. Carby never met a project or task he could not complete. He built everything from wooden bowls to multiple barns. Carby was a loving father, papaw, husband and friend. He never turned down the opportunity to help a person in need or bring a smile to a loved one’s face. Carby embodied the qualities every person should strive to have, and made every room he walked into a brighter place.
Carby was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Catherine Sawyers as well as six (6) sisters, one (1) brother, and one (1) daughter, Rachelle Shambaugh.
Carby is survived by his wife of forty 40 years, Sherry (Kochert) Sawyers, Son Roger Shambaugh of Louisville Kentucky, Daughter Chasity (Tyler) Hunter of Shelbyville, Great Grandson Case Wayne Hunter, Grandson Alex Shambaugh and many other extended family members.
In lieu of flowers, the family request any donations be sent to Tunnel to Towers Foundation (www.t2t.org). As this was a foundation very dear to Carby’s heart.
A memorial service will be held at 12pm on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at Evergreen Funeral Home. Visitation will be 11am-12pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
