July 31, 2016
Bernice (Spears) Gardner, 91, went to be with the Lord Sunday, July 31, 2016. She was born December 25, 1924 in Millstone, Kentucky to the late George and Alice (Craft) Spears. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Hugh K. Gardner, Sr. and brother, Dr. Norvil Spears. She exercised her strong work ethic as book keeper at the A & P store and then Pic Pac for over 30 years before retiring. She also shared her faith with her family any time the doors were open at Ninth and O Baptist and later Beechmont Baptist churches. Having been reared in eastern Kentucky she was a strong woman who also always maintained her appearances and presented herself well as a lady. She would ensure everyone always had a good, usually fried, meal and took full advantage of the peach tree in the yard, making preserves, pies, and cobblers. Even in her later years while living in Ponder Creek she would make sure everyone had everything they needed and that family and friends visiting sat in her best chair. She was a loving mom, mimi, and mamaw who enjoyed loving and caring for her family.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Hugh “Ken” Gardner, Jr. and his wife, Jacklin; sisters, Lynola Bair and Georgene Lawless; grandchildren, Spencer Todd Gardner and Jamie Lin Elmer and her husband, Dwight; and great grandchildren, Mckenzie Gardner and Grayson Kenneth and Linley Marie Elmer.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Wednesday at Arch L. Heady and Son Southern Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3601 Taylor Blvd. Her Funeral Service will be 10:00 am Thursday at the funeral home with burial to follow at Louisville Memorial Gardens West.
