Richard Corbett Guess, Jr. passed away on April 5, 2023 at his home in San Luis Obispo. Born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1947, he was 75 years old, and is survived by his wife of 48 years, Janette Guess, son Shane Guess, and daughter Kristin Guess, all of San Luis Obispo. He is also survived by his brother, Randall Guess of Portland, Oregon, sister Grace Guess and father, Richard Corbett Guess, Sr., both of Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
After graduating from Hattiesburg High School with honors, Richard attended Auburn University on a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. After college he served in the United States Marine Corps, including service in Vietnam. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan before retiring as a Captain when his son Shane was born in 1980.
During his military service and civilian life, Richard was proud to have traveled to every state in the United States. He worked in sales, training, and quality auditing for several large companies including Pac-Bell, AT&T, IBM, Emerson Power, and ABB. During retirement, he kept busy with family genealogy research and Civil War history, and even worked as a United States Postal Service mail carrier, covering a rural route in Nipomo.
Richard loved walking on the Embarcadero in Morro Bay with his wife and enjoying clam chowder in a bread bowl. He loved Dodgers baseball, chewing Bubble-Yum gum, drinking Diet Pepsi, playing hearts and spades, watching Jeopardy, and believe it or not...tax law.
He would never cease to surprise you by recounting a random story or even by reciting a French poem he had memorized from decades ago: "Il pleure dans mon cœur/Comme il pleut sur la ville..." He will be missed by all those that loved him.
