Gayle was born to Truman and Annie Rich on May 7th, 1934 in Longview, Texas. As a child, she moved around a lot and visited many states with her family. She excelled in school, becoming salutatorian of her White Oak senior class of 1951.
Gayle met her husband, Fred Phillips, her senior year of High School. It was a match made in Heaven. He picked her up at a nearby gas station on their first date, and the rest is history. They married 2 years later on October 15th, 1953 right before Fred went to the Korean War.
