Suzanne Marie Horn, 58, of Brighton, CO died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 15, 2018. She was born on May 21, 1959 in Longmont, CO to parents Robert and Irene (Stahlecker) Aschenbrenner. Suzanne is survived by her husband Michael of Brighton; her son Michael (Jennifer) of Morrison, CO; her daughter Amanda (Joshua) of Highlands Ranch, CO; and her three grandchildren, Jackson, Harrison, and Chloe. She is further survived by her sisters, Jill and Gina, and her mother, Irene. Suzanne is preceded in death by her father, Robert, and her sister Rhonda.
Sue grew up in Longmont, where she met her future husband, Michael Horn. They were married on December 29, 1979 and had two children in the subsequent two years. A few years later, Sue and her young family moved to Kansas, where she studied nursing at Cloud Community College. Returning to Colorado after graduation, Sue went on to work as a Registered Nurse in the medical-surgical field. She later specialized in rehabilitation, devoting herself to helping others even after enduring a spinal injury. Sue worked as a Care Coordinator until her recent retirement from the V.A. hospital.
Sue lived for her children and grandchildren. She loved to play with her grandchildren, never hesitating to get on the floor to roll around with them. She was present for and helped with the birth of her granddaughter. At birthdays and holidays, Sue couldn’t resist spoiling her beloved grandchildren more than just a little; her gift bags were always overflowing with toys, clothes, and treats. She always had pennies in her pockets for the kids, and smiles that could light up the night sky whenever she was with them.
A lover of horses, Sue acquired a pair of Arabian mares in the late 1990s, one of which surprised her with a foal a short time later. She raised and trained the filly alongside her other two horses, taking them to shows and on trails up until the time of her passing. Sue also had a great fondness for cats, and made endless rescue and spay efforts in her own barn at home. When she wasn’t tending to her animals, she was at work in the garden. She made a mean salsa with her home-grown vegetables. Sue also loved to travel to the Caribbean with her husband, as well as her son and his family.
A memorial service is scheduled for Sue on Friday, April 27, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman Street in Longmont. Reception and a light lunch will follow.
