Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, J Smith, Jr. passed away at his home on August 17, 2016. Born June 18, 1940 in Longmont, Colorado to Joseph and Margaret (Schell) Smith.J attended Mead and graduated from Longmont High School. He married Connie Waffensmith (Grommon) and later found the love of his life Sherri Kemmer in 1981. They shared their lives together for 37 years.J worked at Rocky Flats and farmed alongside his father. For several years J continued his passion for farming which evolved into a beautiful collection of tractors. He worked in the asphalt business much of his life and launched his own company, St. Vrain Paving in 1990.J was a member of Rocky Mountain Christian Church in Niwot, CO. He served as a member of the Longmont Jaycees, Boulder County Fair Board for many years which he thoroughly enjoyed every year. He was an avid rodeo lover and attended the National Western Stock Show in Denver as well as the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Bull riding and tractor pulls were amongst some of his favorite events.The love of his dogs and cats were a great comfort to him as well as a mainstay in life, as were all animals. The zoo was one of his favorite places to take his grandkids. J and Sherri enjoyed traveling to various destinations with family and friends. During his younger years J enjoyed playing basketball and was a member of several bowling leagues. He was also a golf enthusiast and enjoyed going on four-wheeling mountain excursions.J is survived by his loving wife, daughter Tari Hoagland, grandson Landan and granddaughter Kylee/Blake; son Rick Smith and wife Debbie, granddaughter Lauryn/Josh and grandson Zachary; brother-in-law John Wagner and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He always loved and cherished his children and grandchildren.Preceded in death by Mom, Dad, sisters LaRae Sweet and Patty Wagner and his son-in-law Larry Hoagland.Memorial service will be 11 AM Saturday August 27, 2016 at Rocky Mountain Christian Church, 9447 Niwot Rd., Niwot, CO. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Boulder County Fair Market Sale for scholarships and sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Cremation entrusted to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory.
