Helen, the youngest of four, was born to John and Edith (Lowder) Maggard on May 21, 1936, in Sterling, Colorado. The family lived on a dry-land farm northwest of Sterling until the late 1940s when they moved to Sterling. Helen attended school at the country Mt. Hope School before moving to town.
After graduating from Sterling High School, she attended Northeastern Jr. College for one year. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western State College and after obtaining her teaching credentials, taught business classes at Mapleton High School in Denver.
Helen married John Walker on August 1, 1964, and settled in Westminster before moving to Longmont where she lived until 2017. After John’s death in 1972, she raised their three children on her own. Helen was a member of LifeBridge Christian Church (formerly First Christian Church) in Longmont, and worked at IBM and Neodata before retiring. She spent her retirement days making crafts and playing cards and games with her friends and seven grandchildren. Helen was a fan of the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brothers Ralph, Lowell and Allen. She is survived by daughter Elana (Brett) Guthrie, Parker; sons Eddie (Christine), Parker, and Richard (Katie), Aurora; seven grandchildren, Kylie Guthrie, Ashlea Walker, Kaelen (Guthrie) Gunderson, Melinda Walker, Morgan Walker, Meagan Walker and John Walker; and nieces Lucy and Ann.
Services were held for Helen at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel followed by her interment at Foothills Gardens of Memory. The family appreciates all those that were able to attend.
