George Paul Palko Sr., a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great grandfather and friend passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, at his home in Berthoud, Colorado at the age of 89.
He was born on January 10, 1935, on his family’s farm in Calhan, Colorado, George was the son of Al and Helen (Tomko) Palko. His family moved to Colorado Springs and Pueblo before settling in Denver, where George spent much of his youth.
After earning his High School degree George served in the Navy Reserve from 1953 to 1961, moving to Denver, Colorado upon his return where he started his family. In pursuit of his passion for mechanics, George relocated to Durango, Colorado, where he earned his degree in auto mechanics. His career took him to Longmont, Colorado where he raised his children. George worked at Stan Barrett Ford and later at the University of Colorado, where he worked as Fleet Manager from 1975 until his retirement in 1998. He was responsible for making sure their buses were ready to go to get the students where they needed to go.
Known for his love of cars and his hands-on work ethic, George was rarely found far from a garage, often helping family and friends with car repairs. His generosity extended far beyond the shop—he cherished time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family was at the heart of everything he did from childhood throughout his life. Holidays were always a grand affair where at times there were over 30 people gathering for celebrations, Thanksgiving 2024 was a bit smaller, but he still welcomed his family to celebrate with him. His presence was a constant and reliable source of love, support and joy for all who knew him.
George is survived by his brother, Al Palko; daughters Cynthia, Brenda (Doug), and Jennifer; sons George (Tandy) and Phil; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Shirley Ball, brother Kenneth J. Palko, and grandson Justin.
As a devoted family man and friend, George’s legacy of kindness, hard work, and dedication to his loved ones will continue to be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
