Wallace Chavey Rooney Jr MD passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 7th at the age of 94. He was born in New York City and raised in Bayridge, Brooklyn by his parents Marie and Wallace Chavey Rooney Sr.
Wallace attended Xavier High School and Fordam University and credited the Jesuits for his keen, curious intellect. To his unborn sons’ delight, Rooney abandoned plans of become a priest and attended New York Medical College. Dr Rooney was a celebrated surgeon at many venerable institution including Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, Harvard University and Bellevue Hospital. Later he served the City of New York faithfully as Medical Director for the Department of Corrections. Concurrently Rooney served in the armed forces with distinction and retired a Lieutenant Colonel. He visited Fort Hamilton regularly for the salutes and deals at the commissary.
Wallace was preceded in death by his son Colin Thiele Rooney and his Wife Mary-Ellen ‘Reggie’ Rooney, and is survived by his sons Peter Chavey Rooney and Lucas Caleb Rooney. Grandpa Wally is missed dearly by his Grandchildren Devin, Derek and Morgan Rooney.
An intensely private man who had burst of gregariousness and danced so freely that he was known as ‘crazy legs’ by his family. Rest in Peace Pop.
A visitation for Wallace will be held Saturday, October 12, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM at Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 152 W 71st St, New York, NY 10023. A funeral mass will occur Saturday, October 12, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, 152 W 71st St, New York, NY 10023. An interment will occur Saturday, October 12, 2024 from 11:15 AM to 11:30 AM at Mount Hope Cemetery, 50 Jackson Ave, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY 10706.
