Shirley Merle (Kinsey) Borders, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 24, 2011, at Renaissance Gardens at Seabrook. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 27, at the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Ave., Livingston, N.J., from 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday, July 28, at 10 a.m., with a memorial service to celebrate Shirley's life at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Shirley was born on April 10, 1924, to A. Russell and Irene Kinsey in East Orange, N.J. She was predeceased by her husband, James L. Borders, on Aug. 12, 1990. Shirley lived in Livingston, N.J., from 1952 until moving to Seabrook in 2005. She worked as an actuarial correspondent for the Prudential Insurance Company for seven years before leaving to start her family. Shirley's love of her family was well known and was the driving force in her life. She was active in Boy Scout activities and the Livingston Hockey Club, and was also a deaconess and Circle member at the Livingston Baptist (Federated) Church. Shirley enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends. She loved her time at Bradley Beach, N.J., where she spent every summer of her life, the same beach where she met her husband in 1940. Surviving family members include her three sons, James Jr. and his wife, Dr. Mary Daly, of Stockton, N.J.; Bruce of Coventry, Conn., and Drew and his wife, Gloria (the daughter she never had), of New Britain, Conn. She also leaves her two granddaughters, whom she adored, Jessica Becker and her husband, Jason, of West Hartford, Conn., and Emily of New Britain, Conn. She was predeceased by her sister and best friend, Priscilla Groel, and enjoyed the love of their entire family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Shirley's name to the Livingston First Aid Squad, 62 S. Livingston Ave., Livingston, N.J. 07039.
