Robert was raised in Lakewood New Jersey and graduated High School in 1949. He received a BS degree in Pharmacy from Rutgers University and became a Registered Pharmacist in 1955. He received his Pharmacy Doctor Degree in 1982.
Robert met the love of his life, Golda (deceased), at a temple dance, and was married on January 31, 1955. They were married for 52 years and were very proud of their three children, Eric Steven (deceased), Amy Ellen and Cindy Susan, and their two grandchildren, Shaunna Rochelle Murphy and Jason Alpert Rubin.
Robert worked at a variety of New Jersey pharmacies from 1947-1957 and in 1957 purchased Solomon’s Rexall Pharmacy in Lakewood. He moved that store to 3rd St. and Clifton Ave, operating it as Alpert’s Liggett-Rexall Pharmacy. He co-founded the Lane Drugs Drug Store Chain through a merger with Lakewood Pharmacy in 1960, eventually owning 26 stores in Monmouth, Ocean and Burlington Counties.
Robert has given much of his time to community service, including the NJ Civil Defense Committee, Lakewood Chamber of Commerce, Ocean County Y.M.C.A., Kimble Medical Center Foundation, Ocean County Health Advisory Committee, Lakewood Jaycees, Ocean County Boy Scouts, Monmouth-Ocean Development Council, Ocean County Narcotics Council, Board of Chosen Freeholders, Garden State Bank Advisory Board, and the Pharmaceutical Association. He served in the United States Army, Sargent 1st Class in the Infantry Division at Kearny Shipyards, receiving an honorable discharge in 1959.
Robert has received the prestigious “Man of the Year” Loyal Buffalo Award of the Ocean County Council of the Boy Scouts of America as well as awards from Kimble Medical Center, Ocean County Center of the Arts, Newark Evening News, the Board of Chosen Freeholders, and the State of New Jersey. He received the Monmouth/Ocean Development Council Silver Gull Humanitarian Award in 1983 and had May 27, 1988 proclaimed as Robert B. Alpert Day in Jackson, NJ. He has also received the Mortar and Pestle Trophy, Sales Achievement Award, Parke-Davis National and Regional Pharmaceutical Achievement Awards, and the Certificate of Service and Appreciation Award from Lakewood Township’s Task Force on Narcotics.
Robert is survived by his two daughters, Amy Hidalgo and her husband Michel, Cindy Alpert and her wife Karen, grandchildren, Shaunna Murphy and her husband Sean, and Jason Alpert Rubin as well as step-grandchildren, Marla Frank and husband Greg, Marissa Babula and husband Chris, and Alanna Lavan and husband Joe.
