Richard was born on August 14, 1937, to Dorothy and Dr. Irving Chopin of Newark, NJ.
He attended Rutgers University and graduated from SUNY Downstate Medical College before serving two years as a captain in the U.S. Army where he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service.
While serving in Korea, Dr. Chopin spent his free time attending to the health needs of local villagers. As the only American doctor within 50 miles, he felt called to aid civilians suffering from various diseases and injuries, and was especially devoted to helping afflicted children.
Upon returning to the U.S., Dr. Chopin took a residency in Ophthalmology, the field in which he would continue to practice until 2022. Being a doctor meant the world to him, and he was deeply dedicated to all his patients. He loved teaching the residents at Rutgers Medical School, and was very active in the in the physicians division of the UJA as well as the Commission for the Blind for many years.
Dr. Chopin leaves behind his beloved wife of 50 years, Carole Katcher Chopin, and their children Beth Morgan (Chris) and Steven Tucker. His many nieces, nephews, and grand nephews and nieces also deeply mourn his loss.
The family will be receiving guests for Richard on Friday, October 18, 2024 from 9:45 AM to 10:15 AM at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, New Jersey 07039, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 AM. Burial to follow at B'nai Abraham Memorial Park, 2600 US Route 22 East, Union, New Jersey 07083.
