Joseph Herbert Newman, 95, of Jupiter, FL died on July 1, 2020. He was born and grew up in Brooklyn, NY, moved to West Orange, NJ in 1950, where he lived for 40 years until 1990, when he moved to Florida, while still enjoying summers in New Jersey.
He started his career in the construction materials and aviation industries before transitioning to building science and construction technology, where he excelled professionally for three decades and was a nationally recognized innovator. He retired as Executive Vice President and Director Emeritus at Tishman Realty & Construction Co., Inc., and as President and CEO of Tishman Research Corporation. At Tishman, he developed and championed innovations that produced advances across the commercial construction industry.
Newman was a member emeritus of the National Academy of Engineering, a presidentially-appointed member and former Chairman of the National Institute of Building Sciences, past Chairman of the Building Research Advisory Board, New York Building Congress, and Joint Energy Committee of the real estate community, and former member of numerous committees and boards serving his profession.
Beyond his professional service, he selflessly served as former Commissioner of the Essex County (NJ) Improvement Authority, former Chairman of The First Occupational Center of New Jersey, and former Director of Phoenix House and the Hebrew Free Loan Society.
He earned a Bachelor and Master of Chemical Engineering at Polytechnic University, where he served as a Trustee and Chairman of the University’s Board of Fellows.
Since his retirement in 1988, he enjoyed playing golf at both The Club at Admirals Cove in Florida and Crestmont Country Club in New Jersey. And, he enthusiastically served on the Board of Governors of Admirals Cove’s club.
Joseph is survived by his wife of 70 years, Doris; his children Jane Newman Kessler and Douglas Newman, his son-in-law Andrew Kessler, daughter-in-law Carole Anzalone-Newman; his beloved grandchildren, Nicole Sandler (Jonathan), Erica Grohman (Robert), Noah Kessler (Jodi), and Alyssa Anzalone-Newman; three great grandchildren; and, his brother, Sheldon Newman (Helene) and sister-in-law, Blanche Werner – all of whom he loved and cherished.
A private family service will be held in New Jersey.
