As the years pass, our memories and love of Joe does not waiver one bit!❤️  His smile, loud voice, big loving heart, generosity , and the love of a lion for his family, his tennis, students, and his friends  Is still sadly missed and never will be replaced! Joe is an unforgettable person. We always thought of him as being the Lion of Bayonne. A man with a loud roar, and a big heart. We send our wishes to Donna and the boys. We are sad each year when we receive this reminder.We hope that you are doing OK in the absence of a wonderful husband and father. He is still  loved by all who knew him. Our family misses him dearly. We hold the feelings and memories  of his ever present love , caring and compassion.  It is hard to think of Joe without tears of love and loss. Joe had a street sign in his office at West Orange that said “Caputo Way”. One day when I was in there stringing racquets I commented to someone that wasn’t a real street but the way things get done around here. 

Joe thank you for helping me be able to support my family and allow my wife to stay home and take care of our daughter. I had a blast coaching the clinics and team practices.

We met 30 years ago on the tennis courts. You coached me, Alan and each of our three children.  There was never a dull moment with you around.  When Jaime, my oldest - and not the most serious of students would walk into her lesson wearing a turtleneck and jeans you would yell at her “Jaime what are you doing? You can’t wear that on a tennis court” . Her 9 year old self would yell back, “Joe, don’t speak to me like that! “ You folded like a teddy bear :) . I think she may have been the only student who could get away with that with you!  Matt came next and was a lot more serious - you helped him reach his potential and kept him calm and focused during tournaments and high school try outs.  He was on his way to Bollettieri one summer and you came over with a brand new professional looking red tennis bag - you said he couldn’t go down there with the old beat up one he had…He had to look the part of a serious player!  When my youngest Jonny was a baby and I would take him to the courts to see his older siblings lessons, you put him in the ball hopper so he could “play” too.  Any errant ball that came his way was masterfully deflected by you. 
Your other love, a good meal - brought our families together in the most enjoyable way.  A few of us introduced you to Don Pepe in Queens  - we knew it would be right up your alley.  I remember one summer evening we made plans to go with Jonny and Thomas. They were probably all of 10 years old at the time. You were going to pick me up and we were meeting Alan there.  You finished your lessons for the day and came racing into my driveway, music blaring - you rolled down your window and screamed  “ LORI GET IN THE CAR - I’M STARVING!” The whole ride we talked about our order and how many baked clams we should get!
Joe, I will miss you. You loved hard and we loved you right back. Rest in peace, Lori Jacobs

Dear Joe, 

From the age of about 7 years we started playing tennis together. There are so many countless memories on and off the court, some of which include Mets games, and just taking an “extended break” on the court at Maplewood as we ate goldfish and drank diet coke. I remember when you drove me to my high school tryouts Senior year for tennis. You picked me up in your truck with those huge rims and we blasted the music as you dropped me off. I was nervous, but in that moment I felt like a true BOSS. 

You always had my back and sometimes that even meant tough love, but that was okay and important too. When I transitioned at 23 years old, we hadn’t seen each other as much since I had been away at college and had since moved to San Francisco. Years later, I came to visit you on the court with my mom. I remember you saw me and greeted me with the biggest hug like you had seen me just yesterday. I remember telling you after that interaction, I’m sorry I hadn’t reached out to you sooner, it had been a long time, and I just didn’t know how to approach it; to tell some people from my past. You told me “Matt never let anyone make you feel like you’re less than, and it was so great to see you and looking forward to seeing you soon” Every interaction after that was always seamless, like we hadn’t skipped a beat since meeting when I was 7. 

Our last interaction, although I’m sad it was our last, was one filled with hugs and joy when I told you I moved back to the NY, and now we can finally go to Don Pepe’s. 

Joe, your love for those around you, real unconditional love, was not only infectious, but it’s inspiring and will live on. I will miss you and always look back to our hours and hours on and off the court with a smile and true gratitude.  

Dear Donna, Thomas & Anthony, 

Words can’t express our feelings of sympathy. And words can’t do justice to the impact that Joe had on our lives. A couple months ago, he called me out of the blue to tell me what a great kid (my) Thomas is and that he loved him. I think he wanted to make sure that he told me that in person. I told him thanks, but I also told him that the old saying “it takes a village to raise a child” couldn’t be more true. He was the village leader, and the impact he had on every kid (and adult) who ever walked onto a tennis court at WOTC or MCC can’t be overstated. We talked about parenting about 10x more than we ever talked about tennis. 

The lessons that he taught Thomas will last forever. I will miss my friend dearly, especially on Saturday mornings. But I have zero doubt that I will hear his voice and words often (and loudly) inside my head. May you find comfort that he was so admired, loved his family with all his heart and left behind what will be an enduring legacy.

Words cannot express the sadness that engulfs my entire family over Joe’s passing. My Dad introduced me to Joe almost 25 years ago. Joe was like a brother to me—-2nd father to my son_-and dear friend to my parents—Joe taught my mom and dad,me and of course my son. Back about 20 years ago_-he gave me the confidence and doubles expertise along with a great partner in Justin to go undefeated in 3 years of club matches and win some matches I had no right winning—

He taught my son for over 10 years_—My parents would take Greg to his weekly lesson—joe would always set up chairs for my parents by the court even when it was not allowed. IT was the highlight of my parents week for 10 years to take Greg to his weekly lesson—during the lesson there would of course be the ongoing dialogue between my dad and joe on life,tennis and of course food. AT the end of the lesson—a very little Anthony was sometimes there—whether it was at a lesson, tournament or high school match—my dad would always give Anthony a kiss_-and no matter how old Anthony was—he always gave my dad a kiss back_—Joe trained his kids so well to respect elders!

Tommy was the hitting partner for my son’s lessons since he was 7 years old_—They must have played over 100 sets together growing up—Joe and I dreamed about the 2 boys playing high school tennis together and winning a state championship—never in a million years did we think it would happen. When the time came—TC had gotten so good that high school tennis was not looking good_—-Joe and I—over dinner at Angelo’s of course_—discussed what to do all night—AT the end of the night—TC was playing high school tennis_—and what a ride it was!!!!

The ride ended in the state finals against Westfield—As usual—Tommy and Quentin ran through their matches and the doubles both lost_—IT all came down for the state championship to my son versus arguably a more talented opponent_—I can still remember Joe—who was at his loudest that day

The entire tennis community and many schoolmates and friends were there—But my son only had eyes for you—so did I for that matter as we held hands for the entire final set and it took my hands a week to recover!

Greg won Thank God-and after first hugging my mom and dad—he was the first one to embrace my son when he walked off the court!!!  None of this would have been possible without Joe!!!
We then went back to house—and celebrated with the boys

Joe was the type of friend who was even more there 
for you in tough times—he was right by my side when my mom died 2 years ago which I will never forget!  For 25 years on almost every Saturday and many mondays_—I was with Joe—No matter how bad my week was—I always felt better after being with Joe.

My life will never be the same without Joe

I miss him so badly already—God bless you my dear friend and brother! I will always be there for Donna and your boys!!!

Dear Joe and Caputo Family,
Within 10 minutes of initially meeting you at the first USTA match played between Jeffrey and Anthony, I knew we would become fast friends. Over the ensuing decade, our friendship grew and I came to view you more as a brother. I looked forward to giving you a big hug, a kiss on the cheek, and a whispered "I love you" every time I saw you. I also loved watching you demonstrate your loving and caring manner with Dee, Jeffrey, and Christina throughout the fun times we spent together.
It's not easy summing up into the allotted words how I feel about a man who was "larger than life" and as "selfless, loving, caring, giving, and protective" as anyone I know. Simply stated, to be a Joe Caputo family member, friend, children's friend and/or client was to be in a very good place, indeed. You knew that Joe was loving you, investing in you, looking after you, and seeking to provide you with all that he had to give!
The happiest I observed Joe (on so very many occasions) was when he was giving something to others (ie. tennis lessons; university clothing; raffle prizes; catered meals; etc.). Only when it came to food did I ever hear him discuss his own wants and needs (think: two entrees a night cooked by his beloved Donna!).
Joe's obituary rightly mentions his legacy. To my mind, through his words and actions, Joe established an enormous legacy that will endure through providing great memories and comfort to those he touched for many years to come. Joe was a GREAT man who I will remember lovingly for the rest of my living years. 
Joe, I love you forever and always...and look forward to sharing more fun times when we meet up again! Love, Scott

Thank you for all you have done for me. I’ll never forget holidays spent with you.  Growing up you always made everyone laugh. You were the best uncle and so good to me. I’ll be forever thankful for you and Aunt Donna opening up your home to me while I went to school up north. You both always waited for me to come home from class to take me to dinner even when it was late. You were loving, kind and selfless. I will miss you so much. I love you Uncle Joe. Rest In Peace. To the Caputo Family,

There are some people who leave an indelible mark on your life.  Joe was one such person.  He was larger than life, with a personality that screamed, "Here I am!"

I, along with my sons Justin and Adam, took tennis lessons and clinics from Joe for many years, both at WOTC and MCC.  Joe had a unique style of teaching that truly resonated with me.  I can remember when I didn't move quickly enough to get a ball, Joe would bark, "Lynn, are you waiting for an invitation to get the ball?"  That comment alone was all I needed to hustle!  Joe's teachings and guidance left me with a sense of pride in my accomplishments and my ability to achieve things that I didn't think were possible for me.  I will forever be grateful to him for that.

With regard to you, Donna, Joe adored you.  He always spoke so highly of you.  I know one of the reasons he worked as hard as he did was so that he could give you all the things he felt you deserved and wanted you to have.  You were his "rock."

I only met you, Thomas, a few times on the MCC tennis courts.  Your father beamed with pride, both as your father and as your tennis coach.  I know he had such high hopes for you, wanting you to go even further than he had in the tennis world, and from what I hear, you are quite the tennis athlete!

Anthony, I don't recollect if we have ever met before or if I just know about you from all of your dad's bragging about you! For sure, you were one of the joys of his life.

To the entire Caputo family, I can only imagine the pain you are enduring.  Please know that Joe's friends, colleagues and the entire tennis community is mourning with you.

Joe, where do I begin, you were my teacher, my friend. I’ve never met anyone like you before. You had the unabashed confidence of a thousand men. Whether it was walking behind the courts, pushing the curtain to let everyone know you were there, to pulling into the parking lot with the windows down, music blaring, singing along to every word, that was you unapologetic, loud, “TREMENDOUS!” I remember telling my dad on Friday and Saturday nights “wake me up early so I can go with you to hit.” We would stop at Dunkin’ Donuts to get you that large tea with the two tea bags, it had to have two tea bags to give you that extra juice because we all know you needed some extra juice. Anyone who knows me knows I love my sleep and as much as I hated waking up at 6am on the weekends I did it because it meant spending quality time with my dad and it also meant spending quality time with you and I’m so glad I did. 

Joe, on the court I knew I would always get your best and I always tried to give you mine. I knew if I admired a shot for just a millisecond too long I would hear it “stop lovin’ yourself,” or when I wanted to serve like Patrick Rafter instead of the smooth service motion you had worked so hard to teach me, and would rush it, I can still hear it “stop Raftering you’re serve,” or when you would need to get someone’s attention on court 7 or 8 and we would be on court 10 you would turn into the “SNIPER!” and start launching tennis balls until you got their attention, or when we would just need a minute, “DRINK!” 

Joe, I remember you coming to my high school matches stopping first at the Magic Fountain to get milkshakes and pretzels. Whenever you came it always gave me an extra bounce in my step, it was like your confidence was contagious. I remember about 4-5 summers ago coming to Maplewood with my brother during our lunch hour to get on the court and drill with your current top students. It was so much fun watching you in your element from a different perspective. 

Joe, I remember when my dad called me with the heartbreaking news that you had been diagnosed with cancer, I was in my garage cleaning it out, and I just cried. Later I composed myself, called your cell phone and left you a message saying I was here for you, whatever you needed. I remember the last time we spoke face to face after my son graduated from preschool and I said I think he’ll be ready for lessons in the fall and there’s no one I want giving him his first lesson other than you. I remember going to the hospital with my dad last week and walking the hallways with a nervousness towards the ICU not knowing what to expect once we got to your room and then finally getting there, realizing how bad it really was and not knowing what to do other than say a prayer and whisper in your ear that “you have to fight, you have to stay strong, I love you.”

Joe, you’ve left behind a great legacy in Thomas and Anthony, two young men that have all the best attributes of you, their father. I know how proud of them you were and still are. I hope that your boys and wife Donna can take some comfort in knowing that you lived your life to the fullest everyday and your memory will live on forever in my heart. 

I listened to you on the court when you told me to stop lovin’ myself but I can tell you this, I will never stop loving you. 

anyone that has spent any amount of time with me, knows about my love and passion for tennis. but none of that would be possible if it weren't for this guy. when I was new to the team, I would beg him to notice me; how hard I was trying, how much I wanted to learn. I would send him long emails that I would edit 5 times, then finally one day he invited me to a clinic with him. the rest is history. for so many years, eventually I was seeing him every day, and while its no secret I am not a natural born athlete, and he loved to point out who in fact was, he would try so hard to get me to be the best I could. problem was, he made it so fun and I enjoyed being with him so much every day- so much so that our coach/student relationship grew to such a friendship that words can't really explain. there would be days we would say nothing on the court, and days we would all laugh so hard..he was bigger than life itself. together like any of his students we would discuss kids, college, loss, seton hall basketball, and sometimes after a hard loss he'd sit me down on that driving court sweeper and give me a talk like no one else could, often bringing me to tears on how I could get to where I want to be, so emphatically that I still remember so many of his words and his passion. when my mother was sick, he would call and text, checking in on her and me..I cried to him more than once. but it will be the laughs I'll remember most. "Colls you kill me". He knew when I was pissed, or when I was not focused, but mostly he knew when I was at my best and never failed to tell me so. and this is just from a student of his who became a friend. it's his family now that needs many prayers and support, while we all mourn this tremendous loss. I love ya Joe. I'll miss you beyond what any words can say. I'll forever hear your voice in my head. I will always carry you in my heart.

I am forever grateful to have an uncle like you. You got me involved with tennis and always made sure I had everything I needed. I was the best dressed on the court and I always had your endless support. You were the life of family gatherings.  Your chocolate chip cookies were my favorite. You are loved by so many and you’ll forever be in my heart.

You were a tremendous part of my childhood memories. From WOTC to MCC, I truly appreciate everything you did in helping me become the underachieving, head-case of a player that I was. With fond memories I’ll remember riding my bike to MCC while you fit me in the best games. I remember the constant rantings about the ‘tremendous’ sausage and peppers sandwich you had the night before. You were a great man, great coach and a great person. You will be sorely missed. 

Dear Joe,

You meant so much to Peter, Petey, Tony and the entire Uzzolino Family. Whenever the boys spent time with you they would come home and regale me with stories of how much fun they had. They would re-enact the days events, actually morphing in to you. They really loved you and every minute they ever spent with you. 

Thank you for bringing so much joy to their young lives, all the way through to their adult lives. We spent so many milestones together, christenings, communions, graduations, weddings. 

You were larger than life in our home.  Today we mourn your loss but I know the joy of your memory will live forever in our hearts.

Years later, you insisted on me introducing tennis to my two kids. Now Emi and Cyrus are both tennis player because of you. Every moment you had you worked with Emi even if you were tired, exhausted or needed to go home. You were determined to make  her a tennis player, I can say you succeeded.  That’s the type of person you are always sacrificing yourself and giving  to others.  Thank you for everything you have done for me and my family. 
Without you Court #7 and West Orange Tennis Club will never be the same for me. For 10 years all I heard everyday at 2:15 was “Yudy get ready we eating big today”. I will never hear those words again.

Dear Joe, 

Words cannot describe how much you meant  to me, you were my biggest supporter, my coach and someone who was like a second father to me. You were the first person who was able to make me move my feet on the court, the first person to never give up on me, who always believed in me. There were so many memories we created together over the years. Starting with the pajama pants, I remember 9-10 year old me would come in to take a lesson wearing these ridiculous leggings with stars and all kinds of patterns on them and you would tell me “could you please stop wearing those pajama pants to tennis” so you bought me real tennis clothes, head to toe. Of course you had something to say about that too but those remarks always brought a smile to my face. Joe you opened your heart to so many people, you showed me what it was to give a 120 percent no matter what the circumstances were, you taught me to fight. Without you and your support I wouldn’t have been able to reach the level I am now or the level I potentially have to reach.

To the Caputo Family. What can I say Joe changed my family’s life and made my son Jared in to the man he is today. He also was a dear friend.  We met Joe in 2002 my son was 4 going on 5. From that summer at Maplewood Country Club joe forever changed my sons life. He fought him the love of tennis  with My son becoming the number one singles player at Columbia High School. More importantly he taught Jared how to work hard not only at tennis but by being a good son student and person. Last year at the club Joe yells to me  “And come here  I just want you to know you have done a great job bringing up your boy, he is a great kid you should be proud”. Those words meant so much to me and I have told this story to my son and others over the last year. Coming from Joe it just meant so much to me and him. Our entire family have known Joe for so many years my two daughters and my wife.  He was a friend always positive always supportive of all of us and we looked  forward to seeing him on the courts at Maplewood or West Orange. or wherever we encountered him. We had a special relationship with him a comfortable relationship and we all will miss him so so much. Love ya Joe and the Caputo family. He life was a blessing to so many!!

Mr. Caputo was an amazing father and loving Husband. He always welcomed me into his home with open arms. He also raised two amazing boys who I have had the privilege becoming best friends with. Whenever I reached out for a helping hand Mr. Caputo went above and beyond to support me.

We are so deeply saddened at your husband and father’s passing and want you to know that he was appreciated, loved and cherished by each one of us Vinsonhalers -Jen, Mike, Caitlin and Ashley.  
14 years ago, I met Joe at MCC and I knew instantly he was the best coach for me . A  talented tennis professional who was direct  but funny, kind and loving who was going to get me back in shape, bring my level of play up and make it fun! Joe was the type of person I was raised to respect and appreciate; he was a devoted family man, he had an incredible work ethic, hardest 
working guy I’ve ever met, he spoke loudly and looked  you in the eye, he was direct and to the point whether it was coaching  you, giving you technical feedback, yelling at you for doing something dumb or choking, complimenting you when you did something right and cheering for you when he saw his instructions paying off in your play.   He also had the biggest heart and really cared for the people in his life, his family, co-workers, friends and clients. Everyone he taught  shared a special relationship with Joe that comes from spending quality time together one on one or in a small group , playing tennis, talking about tennis, family, life’s ups and downs-young or old, he captured them all ,  he was the best! He taught my daughter to be a tennis player and treated her like she was his own daughter.  She like all of his young students he helped raise in tennis and life and she and all of these kids will love him and keep him in their hearts like we adults will forever.  We will all hear his booming voice in our heads and it will put a smile on our face while we wipe away the tears.    And so I say to Joe : We love you Joe  and will miss you terribly. Thanks for teaching us tennis and for all the wonderful memories - god bless you and keep you, The Vinsonhalers- Mike, Jen and Caitlin

Hi Joe

I want you to know that I love you from the bottom of my heart.  Words cannot describe the feelings I have for you but I’ll try.  God brought us together and you know we talked about this a lot.  We both believe in fate.  You called me at a time when I needed a helping hand.  You took me in like a son.  From the beginning I always knew you had my back and I always had yours.  When you asked for help with something, I probably already did.  It’s as if we knew what was on each other’s minds.  We worked together like a well oiled machine.  You always knew if something bothered me and knew exactly what to say to cheer me up.  It was like we were always on the same wavelength.  I would bring you up when you were down and you would do the same for me in return.  I can’t imagine life without you and still don’t want to.  Joe, I always looked up to you.  The way you loved and cared for your family was endless.  I have always admired everything about you and try my best to emulate you in each and every way possible.  Your work ethic is tremendous.  You gave your sweat, blood and tears to WOTC & MCC.  I mean literally because I would see it by being with you each and every day.  You would worry about everyone else before yourself which is an admirable quality that is very unique.  I remember when you were in bed days after being diagnosed with cancer and you were worried more about my arrhythmia which was such a small thing compared to what you were dealing with.  It brings me to tears to know that someone can be so loving and caring to put others before themselves.  You are a Godsend.  

That’s why you are and always will be my son’s Godfather.  I can remember as if it was yesterday how overjoyed you were and kept saying I’m “El Padrino” to Blake.  You were so happy and it meant everything to me that you accepted.  The way you and Blake looked into each other’s eyes at his Christening was so sweet.  I know one of your wishes was to be able to spend more time with Blake and groom him into becoming a great man.  You can still do it from within his heart and from above watching over him.  I want you to know that Blake will always know how special his Godfather was and always will be.  You will always be part of his life, I promise.  I really love you Joe.  I can go on forever expressing my love and admiration for you.  I love you and always will.

He LOVED to spoil his wife, Donna, to make her happy.  What a great man he was!!!  I had a privilege to get know a GREAT individual, who was a father, a tennis coach, & a great friend.
