He attended Central High School where he played baseball and was chosen for the City, County and All-State teams. Upon graduation, he was scheduled to try out for the Brooklyn Dodgers, but instead was called into the Navy.
After being discharged from service, he attended the Joe Stripp School of Baseball in Florida and was soon contracted to play for the Pittsburg Pirates. He played on the Pirates farm team for the next 3 years while simultaneously studying commercial art at the Institute of Advertising Art in Newark.
He worked as a commercial artist, but soon switched to the Barton Press Printers where he learned art preparation for all forms of printing. During this time, he attended classes at the Newark School of Fine arts and taught art classes to the young boys at Boystown in Kearny, NJ
In 1952, he joined the Turchette Advertising Agency as an art director, but as the company grew, he quickly climbed the ranks becoming a Vice President and eventually a partner and General Manager. He continued his education by attending evening classes in marketing for 3 years at Rutgers University as well as direct mail graphics at NYU.
After a career spanning over 40 years, Gerald retired and moved with his wife, Josephine, who predeceased him, to Normandy Beach, NJ for summers and Boca Raton, Florida for winters. There he enjoyed spending hours on his artwork becoming a member of the Ocean County Artists’ Guild, the Laurelton Art Society, the NJ Professional Artists’ League and eventually, the Rowayton Arts Center in CT.
Gerald is survived by his two daughters, Cynthia Mangiafico of Jupiter, FL and Patricia McQuillen of Rowayton, CT as well as 4 grandchildren, Christopher, Jeffrey and Jessica Mangiafico, and Miles McQuillen.
Services will be conducted from the LaMonica Memorial Home, 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Livingston, NJ on Monday, March 26, 2018, at 10 am followed by the burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Bloomfield.
