Dr. David (“Dave”) M. Gibson of South Orange, New Jersey, entered into his eternal reward surrounded by his loving family on the morning of Monday, July 26, 2021. Born the second son of Robert and Rose Gibson on April 13, 1940, he was predeceased by his siblings Robert, Mary Ellen Gallagher, Thomas, Joseph, and is survived by Sister Marie Rose (“Peachy”) Gibson, RSM. On August 20, 1971, he married the love of his life, Margaret Mary (“Judy”) Reilly, joining the Reilly-Callahan Clan of Southeastern Pennsylvania. He was a beloved son-in-law of Bernard and Margaret (“Peg”) Reilly, and brother-in-law to Bernie, Kevin, Kate, and Dennis. His sons, Geoffrey (of West Orange) and John (of Haddonfield), were born in 1973 and 1976, respectively. Dave was the cherished father-in-law of Kelly (nee McMahon) and Jennifer (nee Murphy); and was devoted grandfather to Kaitlin, Ryan, Elizabeth, Jack, and Caroline.
From 1976 until 2008, he worked at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, serving as Dean of the School of Health Related Professions from 1990 until his retirement. He was known professionally as “Dr. Gibson,” but his favorite titles were “Dad,” “PopPop,” and “Uncle Dave.” Treasured uncle and ‘surrogate grandfather’ to Kathleen (nee Wroblewski) Verfurth, Michael Wroblewski, and James Wroblewski; and ‘second father’ to Michele Gibson-Cappiccilli of Florham Park, Robert Gibson, Jr., and to Anthony and Anne (nee Morrison) Callaghan of Madison and to their children, Sean, Tess, Ruari, and Enya — again, a surrogate grandfather. Dave was loved as ‘uncle’ by the Hubschmann Family of Short Hills: Otakar (Greg), Andrew, Brian, Courtney Dalebroux, Allie, and Kevin.
Dr. Gibson’s viewing will be at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home 145 E. Mt. Pleasant Avenue Livingston, NJ, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 29th, and his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 217 Prospect Street, South Orange, New Jersey, on Friday, July 30th at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the General Fund of Seton Hall University, where Dr. Gibson earned his Doctoral degree.
