Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Werner Sander, 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on August 16, 1938, in Bremen, Germany, he was the cherished son of the late Otto and Bertha Eckert Sander, brother to Betty and Ursula, and Uncle to Jim and Lorna.
Werner proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves, earning an honorable discharge. He built a loving family, becoming a devoted husband to Joan and a father to Rick and Loreen. After Joan’s passing, Werner later found companionship and love with Fran, who had also experienced loss with the passing of her spouse, Bob. Together, they blended their lives and families, embracing their shared journey with warmth and dedication. Werner and Fran were married on August 7, 1988, on Long Island, NY, beginning 36 years of love, laughter, and unwavering partnership. Werner worked with commitment and pride as a distributor for Boar’s Head on Long Island, ultimately retiring in 1997 after many years of service. In retirement, he and Fran embarked on a new chapter together, leaving snowy winters behind for the welcoming community of Little River, SC. There, they cultivated enduring friendships and embraced the joys of their new home.
Werner leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his wife Fran and his children: Richard Sander, Loreen Smith, husband Ben, Robert Pennisi, wife Kim, and Lori Pennisi. He will also be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Robert Pennisi, Jake Pennisi, Joseph Pennisi, John Hodne, Quinn Smith, and Nicholas Hodne, and many nieces and nephews, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
A Celebration of Life will take place at the Palm Lakes Clubhouse at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2024, where we invite all friends and family to gather and honor his memory.
