LuBeth (“Beth”) Kelley Scott passed away on Sunday February 5, 2023. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, February 13, 2023 at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery (5550 Bagging Plant Road, Dublin, VA).
Beth was born March 21, 1940 in Darlington, SC and grew up in Hartsville, SC, the daughter of the late Henrietta Elizabeth Gandy and Orlando Dickson Kelley, Jr. She graduated from Hartsville High School in 1958 and from Furman University in 1962. During her youth Beth was a member of the Hartsville Cotillion and was an avid swimmer and singer. A natural alto, she joined the Furman Singers during her college years. Her love of singing also led to her participation in the choirs of most of the churches of which she was a member during her life.
At Furman she studied elementary education with plans of being an elementary school teacher, but she taught only briefly. She worked for years as a Social Services case worker in Lincoln County, NC and Wythe County, VA. After marrying David Scott in 1982, the two of them opened a dry-cleaning business, which they ran successfully until 1989, when they moved to the South Carolina Grand Strand, an area she had always loved. She eventually became the owner-relations manager for Ocean Creek Resort in Myrtle Beach, a role in which her love of people enabled her to thrive.
Beth was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James Dickson Kelley of Hartsville, SC. She is survived by her husband, David Michael Scott of North Myrtle Beach, SC; two sons – Kevin Sherwood (Karen) of Clemmons, NC and Jonathan Sherwood (Kim) of Plymouth, MA; two stepsons – Michael David Scott and Ricky Dale Scott; one step-daughter – Sharon Faye Scott Shupe; grandchildren Kelley Sherwood and Kathryn Sherwood of Clemmons, NC, Kayla Sherwood Marlow (Tyler) of Knoxville, TN, Kendall Sherwood and Jameson Sherwood of Hanover, MA, and Evelyn Kelley Sherwood of Plymouth, MA. She is also survived by two nephews, Randy (Susan) and Glen (Cathy) Kelley and their families; one niece, Barbara Kelley Griffeth (Jack) and their family; and sister-in-law Barbara (Bobbie) Kirkley Kelley.
