Beryl Shirer, 82, of Little River, SC, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2021. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late Norman Keller and Marion Logan Keller Decker. Beryl was the faithful and loving wife of Donald Shirer, Jr.
A graduate of Grove City College, Beryl taught school in Pennsylvania as well as Texas. Her years of teaching grades primary through college also included her learning American Sign Language. Upon her moving to South Carolina, Beryl became a teacher’s aide where she continued to enjoy her time with children. She and Donald built their home in Heather Lakes where they were married in 1996. She loved the community and became active with the Home Owners Association as a member of the board for several years. Beryl took pride in her home where she loved to plant beautiful flowers. She also spent many hours learning about and making pottery. Those who she loved, and sometimes a stranger, would receive a necklace or bracelet or a piece of pottery made with love from Beryl.
A member of the Pilot Club for over 20 years, Beryl enjoyed her time with those in the club, and was active in the annual Pilot Club Fashion Show. Beryl volunteered in numerous capacities to include the Chamber of Commerce and the Summit Place Senior Home. While spending time at the Summit Place Senior Home, she worked with Alzheimer patients and the general population. A heart for children and those with special needs, Beryl would host puppet shows for small children teaching them brain safety and was active at numerous events for the disabled in the Myrtle Beach area. A fun loving and carefree woman, Beryl would always have a smile on her face, especially while driving around town in her beloved PT Cruiser.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Donald, is her brother and sister-in-law Norman and Alice Keller of Penn Hills PA; two daughters Joann Saylors(Rick), Julie Bortolotti(Jim Scheib) both of Houston, TX; three stepdaughters Donna Wenger(Robert), Tracey Valko,of Pittsburgh PA, Lori May(Brian)of Gettysburg PA; one stepson Mark Shirer(Rose)of Pittsburgh PA. Thirteen grandchildren Philip, Isabella, Chris, Brittany, Amanda, Robert, Madison, Scott. Alexis, Kyle, Drew, Luke, Sophie; two great grandchildren Mila Daba(parents, Amanda and Karim Daba) and Evelyn Shirer(parents, Chris and Leah) as well as her adopted family with one grandchild, Jerry, Jackie and Sophia Phelps of Mooresville NC survive Beryl.
