He was born on February 16, 1937 in Anderson, Missouri, the son of the late Luther and Dorothy Nalley. He was the oldest brother to Edwin, Jerry, Debbie (Chandler), and the late Michael Nalley. Growing up in Kansas, Carlin graduated from DeSoto HS and then received his degree in Biology at Ottawa University. After teaching/coaching at high schools in Pomona and Council Grove, Kansas, he, and his family moved to Lisle where he began his career for 37 years as an educator, administrator, and coach. After 23 years as Lisle’s Athletic Director, Carlin eventually served as District 202’s Assistant Superintendent and then Superintendent until his retirement in 1996.
In addition, he was instrumental in forming the Lisle Park District and was the first Lisle Park District Director in 1968. The Village of Lisle recognized his contributions to the community by claiming September 12, 2020 as “Carlin Nalley Day” and naming a street in downtown Lisle after him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy (Matheson), of 63 years. He was a proud, devoted father to his three children: John (Anne Marie), Karla (Bill Modelski), and Alan (Denise). In addition, he loved his 8 grandchildren (Kevin, Daniel, Mary Patricia, Thomas, Brian, Anne Marie, Katie, and Margaret Mary) cheering them on in all their events and accomplishments.
“Coach” Nalley has had numerous accolades, including being named 1984 National Athletic Director of the Year, being inducted into both the Illinois High School’s Track and Football Coaches Hall of Fames, and the Illinois Track Officials Hall of Fame. As Lisle’s head football coach for 16 years, his teams won 59 consecutive conference games from 1973-1980. In 1967, he started the Lisle Invitational Track Meet (now known as the Carlin Nalley Invite). In addition, he served as the Head Finish Judge at the IHSA Boys’ State Track Meet for decades.
His warm and engaging smile with the sparkle in his eyes will be missed by all of those who he has touched throughout his life. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the “Carlin Nalley Foundation” that awards annual scholarships to LSHS students would be appreciated at www.carlinnalleyfoundation.org.
