Lisbon Falls _ Philip Minard Berry, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, to join our Lord and Savior in the kingdom of Heaven on August 21, 2021. He was 94 years old.
He was born in Fort Fairfield, Maine on December 26, 1926. He was the son of Minard and Grace Berry. He graduated from Edward Little High School in 1944. He then served with honor in the US navy.
He later worked at the Gypsum Mill, during that time, he met and married his wife Bernice (Bunny) Karkos on October 23, 1948. They made a happy life raising their two daughters Stephanie & Sherry. They were married for 72 years.
He also worked at C. P. Wheelers, Lisbon Center Farnsworth Mill, and during that time he also was an insurance agent for Concord General. His last place of employment was the Pejebscot Paper Mill, until he retired in 1989, after 33 years of employment, at the age of 62.
He was a member of the Catholic St. Cyril & Methodius Church, and later the Holy Trinity Church. He was a member of the Slovak Catholic Association and the American Legion, both for many years.
Philip was a caring person who always had a kind word and a smile for everyone. He cherished his time with family and friends. As a family we all went to Bear Pond camps in Turner Maine for a summer vacation for over 40 years. Every Wednesday at camp we all would enjoy Phil’s famous spaghetti sauce with meatballs. That was his special dinner for family and friends. His favorite radio show to listen to was Paul Harvey.
In his early days he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, helped with family projects around their homes, and enjoyed dancing with his wife and daughters at parties. He was very talented in wood working and made furniture for his wife and daughters. He enjoyed playing the harmonica and slide whistle at family birthday parties, which always put a smile on everyone’s faces.
Phil was always ready for a game of cribbage, telling a joke, and hearing a good joke. He worked at exercising every day, was an avid reader of books from the Lisbon Falls library. He loved reading and learning something new which brought him great pleasure. Even at the age of 90 he liked to take a ride around town while doing errands to stay active. Sundays were always a day to get together with family.
Philip is survived by his wife Bernice, his two daughters, Stephanie and husband Richard, Sherry and husband Charlie, his grandchildren Aaron and wife Amanda and her son Kane, whom he thought of very highly, Nichole and husband Johnny, Molly and husband Jeffrey, Christian and wife Sarah. His six great grandchildren, Gavin, Carter, Emma, Brynn, Alivia, and Miranda.
The family would like to thank Androscoggin Home Hospice for their help and compassion, Veterans Administration for helping with his care for the last few years of his life, and a special thanks to Debbie from The Visiting Angels, who took great care of him and the family thought very highly of her. Also, a thanks to dad’s PCP Dr. Fairchild for the many years of taking such good care of him.
