Mercedes Perez, age 85, passed away on December 7th, 2021 after a long battle with dementia at her home in Somerset, NJ. She was born in the city of San Nicolas de Bari in the pre-revolution province of Havana (now the province of Mayabeque) in Cuba. Fleeing from the violence and poverty that followed the revolution, she and her family made their way to the United States. They settled in New Jersey where she worked babysitting as well as factory jobs. It was while working in a toy factory that she met and fell in love with her husband, Eulalio Perez. They bought a home in Elizabeth where they raised their two daughters, Maytee and Mercedes.
She had a kind heart. She loved flowers and butterflies and helping her husband keep the most beautiful garden in town. Holidays and birthdays were made extra special by her excitement, decorations, and thoughtful gifts. Her backyard birds always got their fill at the feeder and she even rescued two stray cats that repaid her kindness with obsessive affection.
What she loved most of all was her family. She adored her mother and shared a strong bond with her siblings. She fussed over her spouse and children. She always knew everyone’s birthday and never failed to call or send a remembrance. There was an endless supply of delicious food in the house because she would spend hours cooking traditional Cuban and American meals, both for the household and just in case anyone dropped by. You wouldn’t be able to leave without at least accepting “un cafecito”.
Mercedes was, and is, intensely loved. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is predeceased by her brother Marcelino Rodriguez, her brothers-in-law Mario Gonzalez and Rolando Vilas, her stepson, William Perez, her mother Benigna “Mima” Rodriguez, and her father Wencelao “Jose Manuel” Rodriguez.
She is survived by her husband Eulalio; her daughters Maytee Sawyer, her husband Thane and their two children – Wren and Nix of Delaware and Mercedes Perez Kobrin and her husband David; her sisters Maria Gonzalez and Juana Vilas, both of Elizabeth; her brother Marto Rodriguez and his wife Ofelia of Florida, her sister-in-law Onilda Rodriguez, her step-children, Ramonita Comas (Jorge), Richard Perez (Carol), and Barbara LaVista (Cesar) and so many beloved nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren that they cannot all be listed.
