Loretta Bober was a research immunologist who dedicated her working career to pharmaceutical research, initially with the Schering Plough Corporation and later by Merck. She received her PhD 50+ years ago from Rutgers University and made significant contributions to the field of immunology, receiving several patents and the Schering Plough’s President’s award for her research. She specialized in developing models that tested new drugs before they are released for human use.
After coming back from a cruise through the Panama Canal Loretta received the
shocking news that she had an early stage of pancreatic cancer. Though things looked
promising, she ultimately lost her battle this past Saturday morning.
Outside of her career, Loretta’s major joy was in traveling the world with her beloved traveling companions which include her daughter, niece, mother, and brother. She truly had a zest for travel and enjoyed the experiences of meeting new people and sharing their culture. Among the countries she visited were Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, England, France, Israel, Iceland, Argentina, Peru, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Poland. Loretta was a lifelong Roman Catholic and, in her travels, visited sites that helped deepen her faith. Religious sites located in as Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Rome, and Częstochowa in Poland supported her beliefs.
When she was not traveling Loretta enjoyed swimming, crabbing, sailing and water skiing on the Jersey Shore. She was also an avid skier and skied on slopes around the Northeast, including those in New Jersey & Vermont.
Loretta was born in Elizabeth NJ and moved to Linden NJ as a young child; she also spent summers in Lavalette NJ at the familial shore home which her family has lovingly owned since the 1950’s.
Loretta is survived by her beloved daughter Marian, her brother Raymond, nieces Marie & Marisa, cousins Dorothy & Wesley Pieta and their daughter Anna as well as numerous other cousins, relatives and friends.
