Shirley was born on February 23, 1931 to Ben and Katherine (Henderson) Peters in Mitchell, Nebraska the 4th of 7 children. She went to school at Mitchell Public Schools and graduated from High School in 1949.
Shirley married Jim Walker on September 30, 1954 in Potter, Nebraska and to this union two sons were born: Jeffery Lynn Walker (1955) and Thomas Lee Walker (1957).
Shirley trusted Jesus as her Savior at the age of 27 on June 19, 1958, at the conclusion of a worship service at Scottsbluff Berean Church. From the 2nd grade on, when she visited a Sunday School class and heard about Jesus, she wanted to know Him. Praying was an important part in her growing up years as she would pour out her heart to the Lord. She had been searching for salvation for a long time. After she trusted Christ the change in her life was immediate. She and Jim began serving the Lord and committed to giving back to the Lord financially.
In December 1967 the family moved to Lincoln to manage the Christian Supply Center for the Berean Fellowship. The Lord used the verse in Gen. 12:1 where the Lord said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people, and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. . .” to confirm in her heart that the Lord was leading them to Lincoln.
Shirley served the Lord in many ways. She loved helping people find appropriate Christian literature at Christian Supply Center, which she helped manage for 20 years, from 1967-1987. She served in the church by teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She helped with the Clothing Exchange for over 20 years. She was available to the Lord to serve in any way He called her to.
Shirley’s life goal was to grow up, get married, have red-headed daughters, and help people. She did grow up, got married, had two sons, served the Lord and invested in eternity. She ALSO had two red-headed girls: one a daughter-in-law and the other a granddaughter.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Jim, sons: Jeff and Carol Walker and family and Tom and Janet Walker and family, and one sister, Patricia Lindley.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Ben and Katherine Peters, her brothers: Vaughn and Keith Peters, her sisters: Doris Hester, Juanita Dinnell, and Barbara Albers, a grandson, Jason Walker and a great-grandson, Joshua Huyhua.
Although she will be missed by her family and friends, Shirley is finally home with her Savior.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, 10:30am at the Lincoln Berean Church, 6400 South 70th, Lincoln, NE
