We are deeply saddened to share the loss of Matthew “Matt” George Marvin. Matt was born on November 23rd, 1989, in Lincoln, Nebraska. He left us much too soon on April 23rd, 2022, in Chicago, Illinois.
Matt was the dearly beloved son of Dan and Donna (Kennedy) Marvin, brother to Katharine Bays and Emily Marvin, brother-in-Law to Sam Bays and uncle to “Fitz”, Sam Fitzgerald Bays, and grandson to Jeanine Kennedy. He has left behind his wonderful girlfriend, Michaela Kluthe, with whom he hoped to share in life’s promises.
Matt was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. He graduated from Southeast High School in 2008. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 2013 with a degree in anthropology. Matt then proceeded to law school at the University of Nebraska, College of Law, he was an editor for the UNL Law Review, graduating with high distinction in 2016.
He practiced at Kutak Rock in Omaha as a technology lawyer but wanted to take his practice to another level and came to Mayer Brown in August of 2021. Matt was a prolific writer publishing on topics as diverse and cutting edge as blockchain consortiums, data privacy concerns in intercompany arrangements, and the challenges of effectively addressing the risk of consequential damages in technology transactions. He loved his new home in Chicago and was thriving at what would have been, a long and distinguished career with Mayer Brown.
While seemingly a quiet man, Matt was known among family and friends for his remarkable sense of humor. He brought joy to all who knew him with a well-timed facial expression or clever remarks. Above-all, he was a master of committing to the “bit”, always answering the phone in the same silly voice, or stumbling over his long legs like one of the Three Stooges. He loved humor, games, solving puzzles, sudoku, Rubik’s Cube, Bop-it, Ticket to Ride, and Gin Rummy. He appreciated art, history, Greek mythology, Star Wars, comedic TV shows, and scary movies. He loved being on a boat, fishing, golfing, and doing things with his family.
Above all, those of us close to Matt will remember him for his otherworldly composition and improvisation on the piano. Matt’s divine talent was felt by everyone who heard him play, beginning with his first recital at age 8, to the Southeast High School Jazz Band, UNL Jazz Bands, his jazz gigs in downtown Lincoln, and at Barrymore’s. Matt’s distinguished resume includes a listing on the IMDB for a song he composed for a movie. Each time Matt sat down to play the piano, his skill, creativity, compositions, and improvisation were pure beauty and beyond measure. And now his soul has surpassed all of us leaving behind an indelible mark on our lives.
We will forever miss you and remember you Matt, until someday when we are all together again. May the Force be with you.
