Charles "Charlie" Burton, age 73, of Lincoln, passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2024. Charlie was born September 19, 1950 to Herbert and Edith Burton. Charlie is survived by his loving children, Matthew Burton, William Burton, Molly (Gavin) Sharples; sister, Beth (David) Macleod; grandson, Jayden Sharples; nephews, Ian and Jamie, along with fellow musicians and friends.
Charlie was a singer, songwriter, and entertainer. His songs were a unique and remarkable blend of catchy tunes and witty, memorable lyrics.
He attended Antioch College in 1969 and was a rock critic for Rolling Stone in the early ‘70’s. In the late ‘70’s he released a debut ‘45 single, "Rock and Roll Behavior." Some of his bands over the years included Charlie Burton and Rock Therapy, The Hiccups, The Cutouts, the Go-Cups, the Dorothy Lynch Mob, Charlie Burton &/or What?, and the Trickle Down Boys. He frequently performed in Lincoln and Omaha, especially at The Zoo Bar, The Drumstick, and The Lift Ticket. A debut full-length album “Is that Charlie Burton Or What” came out in 1980. The 1980’s produced a number of LP’s performed with well-known bands such the Ramones and the Replacements.
He moved to Austin, Texas in the early ‘90’s, playing with guitarist Evan Johns for some tours and forming the Texas Twelve Steppers; they released a debut album, Rustic Fixer Upper, in 1997.
Charlie moved back to Lincoln in 2000, the place that he considered home. He was an avid record collector and spent much of his time, especially in his retirement years getting up early in the morning to be the first one in line at an estate or garage sale. He loved it and he was good at it. Charlie and his music had a profound impact on the community and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. In April, Charlie was diagnosed with cancer. Not once over the past 5 months did he give up. He fought every step of the way and always had hope, often telling jokes and trying to make people laugh. That is how he wanted to be remembered.
