Barbara Jean Gnirk was born in San Francisco, then moved to Billings, Montana and lived there until age six. She then moved back to California and was raised in Woodland. After graduating from high school, she moved to Sacramento. She graduated from Sacramento City College in 1950, and married Chester Gnirk that same year.
She worked for the State Department of Corrections until her first child, Gail, was born in 1952. She stayed at home as three more daughters followed: Janet, Susan, and Christine.
She returned to the workforce in 1966 and worked for an accountant for many years, then opened her own Income Tax office in 1972. She then sold the office in 1982 when she returned to State service until 2000.
Barbara moved to Springfield at Whitney Oaks in Rocklin, California in 1998. She started volunteering, starting with the Sutter Roseville Medical Center from 2000-2014, and the Rocklin Police Department from 2003-2004.
After Chester's passing in 2006, Barbara spent her later years enjoying activities at the retirement community and spending time with her family, which includes five grandchildren: David, Michelle, Brent, Cameron, and Kathryn; and six great-grandchildren: Joey, Luke, Evelyn, Jack, Marshall, and Jackson.
