JOHN EDWARD LINK, 84 of Lima died 1:25 a.m., Friday, July 22, 2011 at Springview Manor Nursing Home. He was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio on Dec. 7, 1926 to Edward George and Dorothy Marie (Kuhn) Link who preceded him in death. On April 28, 1948 he married Audrey M. Fisher and she died on Nov. 18, 2004.
He is survived by his children: Jeannie (Phil) Buggle of Tempe, AZ, Ed (Mary) Link of Dayton, Terri (Pat) O’Brien of Columbus, Susan Tambon of Lima, Jerry (Julie) Link of Sheboygan, WI, Jim (Amy) Link, Jack (Beth Edwards) Link and Mark (Susan) Link all of Lima. He leaves his grandchildren: Cindy (Mark) Soto of Tempe, AZ, Doug (Trish) Buggle of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Kelly Johnson and Kristina Link of Dayton, Rene (Jeff) Smith of Columbus, Shawn O’Brien of Orlando, FL, Nicholas Tambon of Lima, Kevin, Jason and Jared Link all of Columbus, Tiffany (Will) Bolton of Indianapolis, Michelle ,Joshua and Angela Link of Lima, Drew Link of Lima, Aaron, Joe, Matt and Michael Link of Lima. He is also survived by eight great grandchildren, four step grandchildren, a sister-in-law: Peggy Fisher of Seal Beach, CA. He was preceded in death by five sisters: Eileen Lichtle, Lucille Bishop, Dorothy Stemen, Mabel Fisher, Rita Roth and four brothers-in-law and their spouses.
John was a 1944 graduate of Wapakoneta St. Joseph High School. After his graduation he joined the U.S. Army where he served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII serving as an aide to General Douglas McArthur. His job was to draw the battle lines daily and he was proud that under his care, they never lost a man to the enemy. Upon his return from WWII he attended Purdue University for one year before going into the Army Reserves serving in the Korean Conflict as a Master Sargeant . Upon his return, he attended Northwestern Business College where he received his Business Degree.
He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church where he served as an usher. He was also a past president of the Home and School Association and was a Den Pack Leader of B.S.A. Pack 49. John was a founding member of the LCC Athletic Board the Lima C.Y.O. Board.
He was the co-recipient of the 2004 Volunteer-in-service Award at St. Rose Catholic Church. He was a committee chair for the LCC Thunderbird Carnival, and was a 1996 LCC Hall of Fame recipient of the Service to LCC Award. John and his wife were heavily involved in many activities and fund raising for St. Rose and LCC.
John was employed as a salesman for Lima Packing, Val Decker Packing in Piqua for 26 years, Superior Meats of Massillon and retired from Fruit Distributors of Lima.
John was an outgoing, talkative man who never knew a stranger and he would help anyone in need. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 25, 2011 at St. Rose Catholic Church concelebrated by the Revs. David Ross, J. Norbert Howe and Msgr. Christopher Vasko. Entombment will follow in Gethsemani Mausoleum.
Family and friends may call Sunday, July 24th from 2-8 p.m. at Siferd-Orians Funeral Home where a Parish Wake service will be conducted by Msgr. Christopher Vasko at 8 p.m.
